America's Got Talent 4

by  Arthur Perkins

On Tuesday night 12 acts performed on the stage in Hollywood before a live TV audience and a live theatre audience. The one change from the norm of preliminary rounds concerned the judging. There is a surprise about that if you read below, but basically Piers, Sharon and David play a minimal role and the public votes within 2 hours of a show determine which acts move ahead and which do not. So let's get to the Quarterfinals Results show #1.

NBC invested some big bucks to bring in top talent as entertainment between the announcements of positioning. Terry Fator brought his dummies to sing, a standard ballad and then a rock-and-roll one. there was banter with the judges. David responds by stating that Terry is such a big star that even he the celebrity cannot get tickets in Las Vegas to see Terry Fator perform there.

The second headliner was Mariah Carey singing her new song "Obsessed" from her new album. She is obviously lip syncing her way through it. How do I know this? Her volume was not varying as she moved closer to and farther from the microphone. She had a minimalist (not minimal, that would have been preferable) costume on. I was definitely not impressed. Nick Cannon was, but then he's her husband and has no choice. they slinked off the stage together and she goosed him for the camera.

It's time to report what the real results from the first quarterfinal. I made a pick of AcroDunk, Drew Thomas Magic, Kevin Skinner, and Acadian Broad for the top 4 spots and one of Thia Megia, Grandma Lee, Breaksk8 and Mosaic to get that 5th position to move on.

AGT4 producers arranged the presentation of results in groups of 2 or 3 (if you divide 12 by 5 you get 2.4 so the math is inescapable). In the first grouping of AcroDunk vs. Breaksk8 the nod went to AcroDunk and Breaksk8 is going home. In the second group of Lake Houston Dance Company, Drew Thomas and Manuela Horn, it had been clear that Manuela was a goner and anyone that thought Lake Houston Dance Company over Drew Thomas needs to watch YouTube footage of their Tuesday night performances. Without a doubt, it's Drew Thomas doing on and the other 2 acts going home. In the third grouping it was Kevin Skinner vs. Mosaic, I was sad to see that pairing because it meant that Mosaic was definitely history. It was as Drew Thomas and his 3 very beautiful assistants (one his wife) and 3 "welders" are continuing in this competition. In the fourth grouping, it was Platt Brothers, Diva League and Grandma Lee. I believed after Tuesday night's performance that the Diva League was toast and so it was. Platt Brothers were Ok but nothing special and Grandma Lee was a bit special. Nick Cannon announced at this point that the winners were the first 4 vote getters. So that the judges were not left standing around in bemusement a role was created for them of deciding the 5th vs. 6th place finishes. Those acts were Arcadian Broad vs. Thia Megia. This was a difficult choice between a performer who bad unfortunate choices in how long to do the segments of his act vs. one that performed steadily and well. Piers voted Thia, Sharon voted Arcadian (just like they do on Hell's Kitchen to make a tie), and David became the decider. As the seconds wound down to the end of the show David blurts out Arcadian. Arcadian wins thks shootout but from here on he's dead meat. Thia goes home knowing she had done very well. I have to say that I totally agreed with that majority vote, a rare instance where I think Piers was all wet rather than Sharon or David.

This was one of the most enjoyable results shows for any reality series ever. Of course, it you look at my record it is not hard to figure out why. I had 4 of the 5 winners and on the 5th I chose Mosaic/Breaksk8 over Grandma Lee. However, I did have Grandma Lee as one of the 4 acts I thought qualified for a position from my "on the bubble" group. Let's see how I do on Quarterfinal predictions the next 3 weeks.
