So You Think You Can Dance Season 5

by Gina Scarpa

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for the final four dancers to take the stage on So You Think You Can Dance.  The bad news is that season 5 comes to a close tomorrow night.  The good news is that another season is in the works and premiering this fall on FOX!  YAY!  Back to the matter at hand though: only Brandon, Jeanine, Evan, and Kayla remain.  Brandon and Jeanine have been the judges’ favorite but never rule out Evan and Kayla, who have each gained a strong following throughout the season.  I still think it could be anybody’s game tomorrow night and with that said, here’s how tonight went down…

Dancers: Brandon Bryant, Evan Kasprzak, Jeanine Mason, and Kayla Radomski
Style: Pop
Choreographer: Wade Robson
Song: “Boys Boys Boys” by Lady GaGa
What a cute opening number from the final four!  This piece was about football players, cheerleaders, and the flirtations between them.  The judges didn’t give any feedback after this but I have to say that it seemed each dancer held their own throughout the routine.

Dancers: Jeanine Mason and Evan Kasprzak
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Song: “Heartbreaker” by MSTRKRFT featuring John Legend
Now I’m going to preface this by saying that I really do like Sonya Tayeh.  However, she is very hit or miss with me with her routines.  When she goes earthly and natural, I love it.  When she throws back to the 80s (as she did tonight), I want to pull my hair out.  Don’t get me wrong.  It’s danced well.  It just doesn’t do anything for me.

Dancers: Kayla Radomski and Brandon Bryant
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Tyce Diorio
Song: “Bye Bye Love” from All That Jazz
So… all season long, I’ve been wondering where Kayla’s personality has been and so has Nigel.  Tonight, it finally starts to come out.  I don’t know if she’s just pumped that it’s the finale or if she’s been purposely holding out on us a bit.  You can’t take anything away from Kayla and Brandon, who are just technically flawless here.  I could have used a little more chemistry from them but now I’m just being picky…

Dancers: Brandon Bryant and Evan Kasprzak
Style: Pop Jazz
Choreographer: Laurie Ann Gibson
Song: “Nasty Boys” by Janet Jackson
I mean, from the  minute the song started, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take this seriously.  I loved Laurie Ann’s piece with Brandon and Jeanine a few weeks ago but this one sparks from eye rolling from me.  Evan and Brandon are just NOT “nasty boys” and I would’ve preferred a routine that showed their true nature instead of having them embody characters that were their complete opposites.  By the way, I’ll agree Brandon danced it better but do the judges have to be so brutal to Evan?  Jeez.

Dancers: Kayla Radomski and Jeanine Mason
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Mia Michaels
Song: “The Four Sections: IV” by Steve Reich
Thank you, now here is a piece that really shows the true nature of Kayla and Jeanine.  Mia’s piece is about shedding layers and related it to their journey in the competition.  Neither girl danced it better than the other but both danced it to the absolute best of their ability.  Loved this!!

Dancers: Kayla Radomski and Evan Kasprzak
Style: Jive
Choreographer: Tony Meredith and Melanie LePatin
Song: “T.R.O.U.B.L.E.” by Travis Tritt
If you ask me, the judges were a bit too critical with this piece, especially Adam Shankman, who slammed Tony and Meredith by saying the routine wasn’t finale worthy.  Ouch.  I thought this jive was high energy, lots of fun, and the lifts were totally impressive.  Evan held his own partnering Kayla but she certainly stood out as the focal point of the piece.

Dancers: Jeanine Mason and Brandon Bryant
Style: Paso Doble
Choreographer: Louis van Amstel
Song: “Tetsujn” from The Maxtrix Revolutions soundtrack
I can’t say that I liked the concept of this routine… it was like The Matrix meets The Dominatrix.  However, there is just no denying what Brandon and Jeanine have to offer, not only as dancers, but as competitors.  They absolutely kicked butt with this Paso Doble, a style that has given many a dancer trouble over the last five seasons.  Standing ovation from the judges and the crowd – not that I don’t love Evan and Kayla (‘cause I do) but it would be quite a shock if one of these two don’t walk away with the crown tomorrow night.

Each of the four dancers performed a solo during the night and each really showed why they belonged in this finale.  A shirtless Brandon showed his strength, and passion.  A sleek and chic Jeanine displayed beauty, grace, and power.  An adorable and lovable Evan brought his unforgettable unique Broadway style back on the dance floor.  A lovely Kayla demonstrated her undeniable technical ability and fight to win.  Like I said, it really could be anybody’s game…

Be sure to tune in tomorrow night to the live results show, Thursday night at 8pm on FOX!
