So You Think You Can Dance Season 5

By David McAlpine

Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, Kayla, Jeanine, Melissa, Ade, Brandon and Evan all took to the floor in solos, pairs and trios to try and capture America’s votes. Well now, the results are here and tonight we find out which four lucky dancers are going to be in next week’s grand finale.

But not without lots of interval fluff to fill the space between announcing the results step-by-painfully slow-step! And after Janette leaving last week, I’m not really sure who could be staying this week. Could another favorite fall victim to America thinking they’re safe?

The six open the show with a Tyce Diorio Broadway routine to “Send in the Clowns,” which thoroughly creeped me, a clown hater, out. The dancing was great, but I was never a fan of the song, nor clowns, so it was a little disturbing to watch.

Cat gets down to business right away and brings out Jeanine, Kayla and Melissa. After a quick rundown of how they did last night, we find out that Jeanine is the first dancer headed to next week’s finale, leaving Kayla and Melissa to give encores of their solos. Note: this doesn’t mean Jeanine polled the highest number of votes for the girls, but I have a feeling she did. The judges tell her that she totally deserved this (which she did), and that she needs to bring it all next week.

Jessica and Will from last season return to perform their Tyce Diorio routine (which was nominated for an Emmy), “Silence.” To be honest, I really didn’t remember this routine too much from last season, but I’m glad they gave us a refresher.

Now it’s the guys turn as Ade, Brandon and Evan come out on stage. Another quick recap of last night and the second dancer in the finale is…Brandon! No surprise there, he was explosive with Janette as a partner and he’s been pretty unstoppable since.

Next up is the Emmy-winning routine by Mia Michaels to “Mercy,” performed by Katee and Twitch for last season. This one I did remember and I was definitely happy to see it come back. Chelsie and Joshua are back after them to perform their Emmy-nominated tango to “Los Amigos.” Being the ballroom fanatic I am, I was pumped to see this one again, especially with how Joshua executes it—amazing!

Cue Melissa and Ade’s solos, which we saw last night. Though, re watching them, I do think that Kayla seemed a little too desperate in what she was trying to do, and I feel worried for her. At the same time, I love Melissa and I don’t want her to go home, either. For the guys, I wouldn’t be heartbroken if Ade went home and I’d love to see Evan stick around, because I think his personality is infectious and great to watch.

The intermissions continue with a haunting dance by Jabawockeez from America’s Best Dance Crew, then a repeat of Chelsie and Mark’s dance to “Bleeding Love,” which I think is one of the most iconic dances of this entire series.

Now it’s time to cut to the bitter ending where one girl and one guy have to go home. The girls are up first and it’s Kayla advancing, meaning Melissa is out of the competition. After a shout-out to all of the ballerinas in the world, the guys step up to find out their fate and it’s Ade who is leaving as well. Score! At this point, I’m honestly rooting for Evan just because I think he’s the best performer there, but Jeanine is a close second.

Be sure to watch the last performance show of the season next Wednesday at 8/7c on FOX!
