So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Janette Manrara

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, the results were in and they were shocking on So You Think You Can Dance.  Kayla Radomski and Janette Manrara landed in the bottom two.  Janette received the lowest numbers of votes, despite receiving positive feedback week after week from the judges, and was sent home.  Today, Janette spoke  to the press in a conference call.  Read on to find out what she told RealityWanted about handling the different styles of dance thrown at her and the upcoming tour as well as her inspirations and who she felt was her biggest competition.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You always received high praise from the judges for handling any style of dance.  As a ballroom dancer, was there any style in particular that you felt you struggled with in rehearsals?
A. Janette: There’s a few!  I know it comes off like everything was easy for me but there were definitely a few that were difficult. Sonya’s piece was a stamina builder.  The disco piece was a stamina builder.  The tango was a mind game, trying to figure out where to stick my feet and where to bend.  There were a lot of moments when you struggle but you practice as much as you could.  Brandon was an amazing partner.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What dance do you hope makes the tour?
A. Janette: We both really want the tango and the cha cha to make tour.  The cha cha was so much fun!  That song is just an uplifting, happy song.  It was really fun.  The tango, we were both so proud of getting that standing ovation.  Nigel said that night that that’s the closest he’s seen to perfection, how could you not want to dance that again?

Q. Who was the most inspiring person to work with this season?
A. Janette: I really, really enjoyed working with so many people.  I really enjoyed working with Sonya Tayeh.  She has a lot of positive energy.  She pushes you to your limits, but in a positive way.  Of course, there’s Wade Robson.  He was amazing to work with as well, such a creative genius.  He has such cool, quirky, different ideas.  Mia Michaels is just awe inspiring to stand next to.  I didn’t get to work with her on a duet level but we did two group numbers but she was phenomenal.

Q. Who do you think was your biggest competition?
A. Janette: I don’t know because I think all the girls this season were really, really good.  They were talented in different ways.  I wouldn’t be able to pick out one.  I’ve heard that a lot of people thought it would end up being between Jeanine, Kayla, and myself but Melissa was also huge competition because she’s so talented, genuine, and real.  Her personality comes off great through camera.  Randi… not having her around… made us sad because she’s such a great person to be around a powerhouse dancer.

Q. You were very composed when you were eliminated.  Did your parents offer you any support?
A. Janette: My mom and dad… I mean, I’m 25 but I’m still Daddy’s girl.  He was very proud that I spoke the way I did and that didn’t cry.  I was strong because I didn’t think that what was happening was sad.  Because it was the 100th episode and so many dancers and choreographers were there, it felt like more of an accomplishment.  It’s only the beginning of more amazing things to come.  I try to take a very positive approach to things.  It is sad to leave but so many good things come out of the show, I hope.

Q. Nigel and Mia were so complimentary of you last night.  Does that make it harder to go home?
A. Janette: Actually, it makes it easier to go home.  When Mia said what she did to me last night, I was shocked.  She made me feel very accomplished.  It sucks that I couldn’t achieve what Nigel and Mia wanted me to achieve but I go home with a sense of winning and accomplishment.  It’s very bittersweet to know that they feel that way.  It definitely made it easier to go home when Nigel sad that he wanted me to win.
