So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Jason Glover

by Gina Scarpa

It was a very special episode of So You Think You Can Dance last night.  Besides being the usual Thursday night live results show, it was also the 100th episode.  Dancers and choreographers from the previous seasons were on hand to perform some of the most memorable routines.  Unfortunately, two dancers still had to be eliminated from the competition.  Contemporary dancer Jason Glover was the male dancer who received the lowest number of votes and was sent packing.  Today, he spoke to the press in a conference call.  Read on to find out what he told RealityWanted about the Bollywood routine and what he thinks he could have done differently as well as his thoughts on Michael Jackson and his dream dance job.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Looking back on it, do you wish that the Bollywood routine came later in the competition?
A. Jason: You never know.  The hat is a little bit tricky.  Bollywood, I think… it could’ve gone both ways.  I think it was nice to start off the competition strong right out of the gate with Caitlin.  I think we performed it very well but on the other hand, had it come at a later stage, it would’ve given people a chance to see a different side of us.  They saw us as very different right away.  They didn’t get used to our style right away like some of the other dancers.  You just never know with this program and what’s gonna happen next.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I loved both your Broadway and your Hip Hop routines this week.  Do you think that there’s anything you could have done differently to stay in the competition?
A. Jason: I don’t think that I could have done anything better.  I think that certain thing could have been done differently, definitely performance wise with certain dance routines.  I think that I was pleased with the whole process.  It did stink being in the bottom as many times as I was.  I think that proved how much I wanted to stay.  Overall, it’s been a great experience and I couldn’t have asked for more.

Q.  Can you talk about what Michael Jackson meant to you
A. Jason: Michael Jackson, for me, was probably the biggest inspiration dancing.  I started watching him when I was a little kid.  My mom used to play tapes and videos and I would stand in front of the tv and mimic his movement.  That was a big blow.  I found out earlier in the day.  One of the dancers called me.  It kind of sucked.  Phillip came up to me and told me that he had passed.  That was really hard.  I kind of shut down the rest of the day because, for me, that was my idol.  That was the reason why I started dancing.  It was very personal for me and I think that we all took it hard because he was such an influence on the entertainment world, especially dance.

Q. Last week, one of the dancers said that a huge weight is lifted once you make Top 10.  Did you feel that way or did you find it stressful to have to change partners every week?
A. Jason: I think that, for me, I liked the challenge of having different partners every week.  I think, if you’re with the same partner… and it’s not with everyone… I think that some people tend to sit and get comfortable with the partner they’re with.  Performance and chemistry starts to drag.  For me, I was very excited… as much as I loved being with Caitlin… I was excited to switch partners.  I like that the show does that.  Dancers need to be able to adapt to every environment that they’re thrown into.  This week was extremely hard, especially on our bodies and our minds, but I had a great time with it.

Q. You were very emotional when you were eliminated.  Were you surprised that you were the one to go?
A. Jason: To be honest, as good as I felt performing my routines, I was not shocked.  I was at peace with it.  I think I got emotional because of what I had accomplished to that point.  I didn’t think I would even get there.  Of course, watching the video, that doesn’t help in the tear department!  I was happy.

Q. What is your dream dance job?
A. Jason: Anything!  Just as long as I’m dancing, that’s the only thing that’s important to me.  Later down the road, I’d like to get into choreographing.  Maybe the show would bring me back.  Janette and I were talking about maybe choreographing together.

Be sure to tune in when the Top 6 hit the stage, next week on So You Think You Can Dance!
