So You Think You Can Dance Season 5

by David McAlpine

Tonight on So You Think You Can Dance, the field narrows even further to just 12 contestants as the competition gets closer to the top 10 and the stage where America (finally!) gets to decide who ultimately stays and who goes. But for now it's up to the...judges! Is it sad I never get tired of Cat saying that?

Anyway, the show opens with a jazz-inspired, Broadway routine to "Brand New Day" from The Wiz choreographed by none other than Tyce DiIorio. It was even complete with giant picture frame! It was, as always, really great, but some of the camera angles were odd and it seemed like there were more than 14 people on stage.

Anyway, Cat says "hell" *gasp!*, then brings out Karla and Vitolio and Randi and Evan. Karla and Vitolio were new as a couple this week and took on the "kiss of death": the quickstep. Still, the judges thought it was a solid performance and both shined (probably more than the judges thought they would). Randi and Evan, on the other hand, seemed to let everyone down a little bit based on their past performances. And as much as I thought it should have been Randi and Evan, Karla and Vitolio returned to the bottom 3 (which is bad news for Vitolio).

Next up on stage are Janette and Brandon, Kayla and Kupono, and Melissa and Ade. Janette and Brandon were hands down the best couple last night, for probably the second week in a row, and I don't know if anyone would disagree with that. They brought the house down! Of course they're safe, there was no question. Kayla and Kupono brought mixed reviews, but I think that was partially because of the choreography. Melissa and Ade brought the classical pas de deux to the show for the first time, which Nigel loved because it's a new style, it showed a new way of dancing, etc. I don't think it was enough to make America vote for them, but that was just me. Apparently it was, because Melissa and Ade are also announced safe, putting Kayla and Kupono in the bottom three again.

The last two couple on stage are Caitlin and Jason and Jeanine and Philip. Jeanine and Philip had the innovative hip hop routine complete with chain and full of energy. I thought they were a strong second to Janette and Brandon, and I never thought for once they'd be going home. Caitlin and Jason did the weird alien dance and Caitlin got called a "dancing condom," which brought less than thrilled reviews from the judges. Sounds to me like there won't be any newcomers in the bottom three this week. And the final couple safe tonight is: Caitlin and Jason. I gotta say, I'm floored with this decision, and kind of upset. Insert talk about how hard the competition is, and off to prepare for solos.

At this point, Cat's hair is starting to look a little rough. For this week's "world of dance" segment, two contemporary ballet dancers bring their stylings to the stage. It was cool to watch for a little, but I'm more excited about Kelly Clarkson, to be honest.

First up is Karla, dancing to "Blackbird" by Dionne Farris. Her solo is very technical and a lot stronger than last week, almost confident that she has the ability to stay in the competition. I really liked it, and I hope she stays. Vitolio is next, dancing to "Here Comes Goodbye" by Rascal Flatts. His solo is a lot more disappointing, because there seemed to be no thought put into it. After last week, you'd think he would step it up, but I don't think it was enough. Next is Kayla, dancing to
"Stupid" by Sarah MacLachlan. It looks desperate with a side of smile and, I think is going to send her home.

Kupono is next, dancing to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Isreal xxx. I don't like his awkward capri-like jean cutoffs, and he doesn't seem to have much in his solo, but Vitolio's bad solo may be enough to keep him here. Next is Jeanine, dancing to "Moonlight Sonata," finally getting to show off her contemporary stylings. She makes it painfully obvious she's the strongest of the three girls, and she's not going anywhere. Last, but not least, is Philip, dancing to "You'll Find a Way" by Santiago. Again, painfully obvious: he's not going anywhere. My guesses? Vitolio and Kayla.

To keep us entertained, Kelly Clarkson takes the stage and performs "I Do Not Hook Up." I mean I love Kelly, but it seems like it's a little lackluster, kind of like Vitolio's solo. I was slightly disappointed, but it's still enjoyable to watch.

Now it's decision time, first with the girls. Nigel says the judges are unanimous, which isn't shocking. Jeanine is told she gave the strongest solo of the night and that she's safe. Now onto the other two: the judges thought Kayla was static and boring, while Karla has no star quality. In the end, the judges cut Karla (sadly) and, just like that, the six girls remaining are left with a lot of competition.

It's the guys turn now, where the judges are also unanimous (no surprise). Philip gets great comments, though Nigel still manages to slip in some critique, which I felt was unnecessary. Obviously, Philip is safe, bringing it down to Vitolio and Kupono. Vitolio gets knocked for the not delivering thing (which I still don't get), which Kupono gets slammed for not doing anything on stage. Still, Kupono is allowed to continue and Vitolio is given the ax.

For the first time in two weeks, there won't be any new partners. How will the Top 12 fare next week, knowing the Top 10 is quickly looming? Tune in to the performance show of So You Think You Can Dance on Wednesday at 8/7c on FOX to find out!
