The Bachelorette David Good

by Gina Scarpa and David McAlpine

It could have been his aggression, his ego, his inability to get along with Juan, or a number of other things but on Monday night’s episode of The Bachelorette, Jillian had had enough of David.  On their group date, he tried to steal a kiss from Jillian but she shot him down.  A rumor that certain guys on the show could have girlfriends back home became the last straw and he was eliminated at the rose ceremony.  Today, he spoke to reporters in a press conference call and opened up about his portrayal on television and his definition of the Man Code.

Q. On the last group date on the boat, it seemed like you got a little aggressive with Jillian. What was the deal?
A. Dave: I think there was a lot more behind the scenes. I think I was the last guy to even try and go in for a kiss and before I tried, we actually talked and laughed about it for a while. When she turned her cheek, I laughed. It’d never happened to me before and I

didn’t really know what to do but laugh. It was seen as a lot more aggressive than it actually was.

Q. What are your actual feelings towards Juan?
A. Dave: I would not hang out with Juan if I didn’t have to, and I wasn’t the only guy who didn’t get along ith Juan. I’m a pretty outspoken, so I think I was the most outspoken about it. It all happened really late at night after some alcohol, and we’d lived in the same house for a month. I never meant I wanted to kill Juan, I just meant I didn’t like it. We settled it and we hugged it out after, out of sight and out of mind. I have no problem with the guy and it was blown out of proportion.

Q. It seemed like you drank a lot. How much alcohol were you having?
A. Dave: When you lock 20 guys in a house and you take away the phones and TVs and give them a full liquor bar, there’s really nothing else to do. The rose ceremonies are very long and drinks are provided the whole time, so it definitely had something to do with the way everyone acted, but it’s no excuse. I had to call my grandparents and apologize because I didn’t know what they were going to show. I was really upset with the way I behaved on the show, specifically with my cussing, but everybody knows who I am and knows I’m not like that. Everyone makes their mistakes, and mine was in front of 15 million people. They really ran with it and made it bigger than it really was.

Q. Were you disappointed with the way the show portrayed you?
A. Dave: What you saw was 1% of me as a person and it’s the 1% that is bad about David Good. I’m a very outgoing, very comical person, so for America to see that one side of me was a loss for the show and a loss of me as a person. It seemed like they took that aspect and really ran with it. Yes, I did all that stuff, but that was only one bit. There’s a reason I got the first impression rose because everyone was always cracking up around me and having a good time. That’s why I think the Harlem Globetrotters picked me, too.

Q. Were you really tongue tied the first time you stepped out of the limo and saw Jillian?
A. Dave: I wasn’t really tongue-tied, I’ve never really been at a loss for words. They told us to have a plan so that we’d stand out amongst all the guys, and I’m a pretty confident, borderline cocky guy, which I thought would turn her off. So I acted nrvous instead and I told her straight out, and it worked! She definitely called me out on it later, though. But you only have one time to stand out, so that was my idea.

Q. How did you react when Jillian ended the rose ceremony and brought up the fact that someone had told her that another guy has a girlfriend?
A. Dave: I was really upset about the rose ceremony getting cut short, especially since Robby and Michael didn’t get time with her. To be honest, I thought I was going into the next round and I was willing to give up my one-on-one time with Jillian for them. I was definitely caught off guard and when I watched the show, it really blew me away that Tanner said something like that and broke the Man-Code.

Q. Has being on the show hindered your dating life?
A. Dave: No, believe it or not, it has not hindered my dating. I’ve been out a couple times since I’ve been back and I’ll hear girls in groups talking about me, asking if it’s me, and they seem really tentative about it.  Then they come up to me and we talk, and they all tell me how much I’m not like what they saw on the show. They all tell me that they didn’t like me, that they told their friends I’m a jerk, they were kind of standoffish, but they saw who I actually was after a while.

Q. If you had to pick, who do you think is the best fit for Jillian?
A. Dave: There are some great guys left on the show, but I would have to say Kiptyn or Reid, probably Kiptyn. He’s a great all around guy, he seems like he’s a good fit for her, and they look like a cute couple together.

Q. What exactly is the Man Code?
A. Dave: I grew up in the country and I’m a country boy at heart, I’m as blue collar as they come. There’s just a certain mentality with blue collar people, I guess. I really don’t know how to explain it, but there are things that you do and you just don’t do. There wer definitely guys on the show that were raised differently than me and some of the things they said just blew my mind. I don’t like wearing pink shirts, I don’t put lotion on my hands… it’s just little things like that.

Q. How did Juan break the Man Code? Any specific instances?
A. Dave: We’d be all hanging by the pool in our scrubs, you know shorts and a tank top, then we’d see Juan go upstairs and the cameras would follow him.  He’d come back down in nice sandals and an argyle sweater and he’d fill up a beer, sit down and then pretend like he’s part of the conversation.  Everyone looked up to me as like a big brother, so I finally said something about it. I just don’t like fake people.
