American Idol 8

by Gina Scarpa

Because the judges decided to use their save last week on Matt Giraud last week on American Idol, two contestants will be headed home this week.  The pressure is on as the Top 7 perform songs from the disco era.  No time for mentors or video montages before the songs tonight - we’re getting right to the performances.  Alright then.  Here we go.

Lil Rounds - "I'm Every Woman" by Chaka Khan
Lil has certainly struggled in the competition this season in terms of winning over the judges and keeping herself out of the bottom three.  However, she redeems herself a bit with a solid song choice and performance.  This is the Lil I’ve been waiting for because every season of American Idol needs a good diva.  However, Randy still thinks that Lil isn’t showing herself as an artist.   I really don’t get what they want from her.  Do you?

Kris Allen - "She Works Hard For the Money" - Donna Summer
Ok so disco and Kris Allen go together about as well as toothpaste and orange juice.  The thing is, though, that Kris is a really smart guy so he takes an extremely well known disco song and completely makes it his own.  With a few musicians by the side, Kris performs an acoustic version of this Donna Summer classic.  The judges appreciate his originality, as do I.  Give this guy a record deal, please.

Danny Gokey - "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire
At first, when Seacrest said the name of the song, I didn’t think I knew it but the minute Danny opened his mouth, I recognized it.  Here’s the deal.  If you just heard the vocal, you’d think Danny kicked some ass on this but his performance of it is just okay.  His voice may have soul but his dance moves do not!  I will give him credit for staying away from sappy, heartfelt songs and cutting loose a bit.  The judges praise him but Simon does point out that the performance was a bit awkward.  Good to know Simon and I are on teh same page.

Allison Iraheta - "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer

There really aren't many people in the Top 7 that you would expect to do well on disco night and Allison is an example of why.  Where as Kris took a disco song, made his own, and succeeded, Allison's arrangement doesn't win me over.  She's a great singer, though, so I think tomorrow night will come down to whether America appreciates her vocals or loved/hated that version.  Simon feels that she came into this week as an underdog but calls her performance "brilliant".  C'mon Simon, I don't know if I'd go that far...

Adam Lambert - "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman

Now here's a song I'm not very familiar with but Adam, I think, is starting to learn the difference between parading around the stage and toning down his performances.  Yeah, he still wails and screams like you'd expect him to.  He's like Mariah Carey, when she felt the need to show off her glass-shattering soprano in every song from the 90s.  You didn't deny her talent, though, either, did you?  Of course, the judges can't do anything but sing his praises to the high heavens.

Matt Giraud - "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees

Alright, so Matt has some ground to make up with America after (almost) getting the boot last week.  Unfortunately, it just doesn't quite cut it and it hurts my heart to say that.  Nobody wants Matt to succeed more than me but I don't know what's going on with him over the last few weeks.  I'm still in the fan club but I think, tomorrow night, he'll be one of the two to head home.  Randy points out that, although he doesn't like the song choice or arrangement, Matt can really, really sing.  Agreed.

Anoop Desai - "Dim All The Lights" by Donna Summer

Tonight's show closes with Anoop in the coveted final spot.  Ballad Anoop joins us tonight, not Silly Upbeat Anoop, and it appears he felt no need to shave for the show.  Scruffin' it up a bit.  The guy is a cheese bucket but I do love his voice, despite the rough ending.  While most of the judges try to be nice with their feedback, Simon harshly calls it his worst performance of the season.  Ouch.

Bottom three prediction: Matt Giraud, Anoop Desai, Allison Iraheta

Tune in to American Idol tomorrow night, Wednesday at 9pm ET on FOX, for the live results.
