Cathy Skell of The Biggest Loser Couples

by David McAlpine & Gina Scarpa

On this week's episode of The Biggest Loser: Couples, the blue team lost their weigh-in and was forced to eliminated another teammate.  Aubrey and Cathy were on the chopping block and Cathy decided that, as the "mom" of the group, she'd sacrifice herself because it was her time to go.  Since leaving the show, Cathy has taken what she learned on The Biggest Loser and motivated her whole family to get into shape.  Today, Cathy spoke to RealityWanted in an interview about her time on the show and what she's doing to prepare for the upcoming live finale.

Q. David, RealityWanted: Whose idea was it to apply for The Biggest Loser: Couples?
A. Cathy: Kristin had tried on her own previously.  She called me on a Thursday, and said there was an open casting call on Saturday in Milwaukee.  Kristin, myself, and my youngest daughter, Stephanie, went.

Q. David, RealityWanted: What was it like to get to the ranch only to find out you'd be spending the next 30 days at home? What went through your mind at that time?
A. Cathy: I knew I would be the one going home because Kristin is the 2nd heaviest girl ever on the show and it was obvious that she needed to stay at the ranch.  I went home for the 30 days with a positive attitude.  Knowing how hard Kristin was working at the ranch made me work extra hard at home. I didn't want to let her down when I came back to the ranch.  I wanted her to be proud of her mother.

Q. David, RealityWanted: Was it weird working out with Sione and Filipe in the same gym for the last 2 weeks, even though they weren't on your team?
A. Cathy: No.  Sione and Filipe were like brothers to Kristin and they were original members of the blue team.  My thoughts were: We are all here for the same reason and that is to be healthy and lose weight.  Who was I to complain and turn them away if they felt like they were not getting the help they needed?  They turned to Bob to help them.

Q. David, RealityWanted: What was the biggest challenge you faced at the ranch? What about now, at home?
A. Cathy: Running has always been my biggest challenge.  I have asthma and never even tried to run in the past.  I now challenge myself daily and work at improving my distance.  I look forward to running the Fox Cities Marathon in our city.  This will be a goal (and challenge) for myself and Krisitn plans to join me.

Q. David, RealityWanted: What is the most important lesson you learned on The Biggest Loser?
A. Cathy: To believe in myself and my abilities.  To push and challenge myself to make myself stronger.  Set short term goals and have a plan in place to achieve them.

Q. David, RealityWanted: How did you decide to get your entire family involved in losing weight?
A. Cathy: My family made that decision on their own!  We have all struggled with weight loss in the past, and we were always our own worst enemies.  Now, things have changed.  We meet at the gym together.  We experience new classes at the gym together.  We sometimes even have our own spin classes.  To make it fun, we create our own spin playlists on our Ipods.  We are looking forward to this summer together as a family and how our lives will change.  I look forward to horseback riding again, and get up on water skis again.  I want to take my grandsons hiking!  I will be 50 years old this fall and plan to be in the best shape of my life!

Q. David, RealityWanted: What are you and your daughters doing to accomplish your goal of
collectively losing 205 pounds before finale night?
A. Cathy: We now meet and weigh in together to hold each other accountable.  We discuss recipe ideas and little tips to help us through the work day.  We are all different and discuss what benefits us the most at the gym, because some of us may have an injury and there are certain exercises we can do.  The important thing is that we don't have to be at the gym all the time.  We share exercise videos, walk, and meet up at spin class.  I keep a log at home and record 5k runs that I do at home in the evening.  Its always exciting to try and beat my previous time.   My grandchildren now are involved and they love to be on my treadmill at home and they make me time them to run a 1/2 mile.  We keep it mixed up so it never gets boring!!
