American Idol Season 8

I'm not gonna lie to you.  I fast forwarded through a whole lot of last night's performance episode of American Idol.  Originally, I had high hopes for this group of 12, as there were several people in there I liked during Hollywood week.  It just wasn't doing it for me, though, and I find myself growing impatient with the show.  I want my Top 12 already, dammit!  Trying to predict who will be going through tonight is going to be tough.  So far, I'm 5-6 with my predictions and I'm pretty proud of that.  Even as I write this, I struggle internally and hope that my gut instincts are correct.  At the moment, I'm throwing my support behind four people: Lil Rounds, Jorge Nunez, Junot Joyer, and Kristen McNamara.

Lil Rounds was a favorite of mine from the very beginning.  Every season needs a diva and Lil should advance tonight into the Top 12 to fill that role.  The great thing about Lil, though, is that she's a diva onstage but a very likable person offstage.  Her talent and personality should hopefully be enough to carry her far in this competition as she is certainly worthy of moving on.  I'm also hoping to see Jorge Nunez, of Puerto Rico, move on.  Jorge is unlike other contestants in the past and it's about time the show incorporated a little world music into this competition.  He's got one of the best set of pipes this season and I will be happily clapping when his name is called to take a seat tonight.

That third chair... now that's a tough one, especially since I really like both Junot Joyer and Kristen McNamara.  Junot impressed with his rendition of "Hey There, Delilah", which he also performed in Hollywood.  What I loved about it is that he took a song that I'm absolutely sick of, that the radio played to death, and made it new and interesting.  The show has yet to produce a marketable male R&B artist (I'm talking to you Ruben Studdard) and I think Junot could something out of making the Top 12.  Though I really like Kristen, she has two things working against her.  First, she chose the wrong song and overperformed a Tracy Chapman song.  Second, Alexis Grace is already in the Top 12, the two are similar, but Alexis is better.  Kristen is still trying to figure herself out and unfortuantely, that may be her undoing.

Final predictions for tonight: Lil Rounds, Jorge Nunez, Junot Joyer
