Celebrity Apprentice

With 16 new celebrities (if you can call some of them that) and lots of money going to charity, the second season of The Celebrity Apprentice kicked off tonight, and it’s shaping up to be…well, interesting. Semi-entertaining to say the least.

The cast, like last season, is split into men versus women and ranges from TV personalities Joan and Melissa Rivers to professional athletes Dennis Rodman and Herschel Walker. After being greeted by Donald Trump, teams have to come up with a name and a project manager. The women default to Joan Rivers because she’s the oldest of the group (something I’m surprised she’s willing to admit) and select “Athena” as their name, since she was the goddess of intelligent war. The men have a harder time focusing, but end up picking Herschel Walker and choosing “Kotu” as their name, an abbreviation for “Kings of the Universe.” …And cue the crickets.

For the first task, teams have to bake their own cupcakes (yes, with their own hands) and sell them. The team that gets the most money (donations included) wins. The men immediately offer up comedian Andrew Dice Clay as their spokesperson since he’s the self-proclaimed “King of New York” and he can attract people. On the women’s side, poker player Annie Duke starts calling in favors and demanding everyone do the same, putting her at odds with some of her team.

Both teams split up between graphics and advertising and baking efforts. In the kitchen, both teams opt to make vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, but the women go for bulk whereas the men choose to make less. Annie takes charge of the kitchen, specifically the vanilla cupcakes, for the women, while Andrew and Dennis take a more passive role for the men.

Melissa, Joan, Playboy playmate Brandi Roderick and “Deal or No Deal” model Claudia Jordan (how’s that for an NBC plug?) work on the graphics, where Melissa takes over. Meanwhile, auto customization specialist Jesse James works on making the men’s truck “bitchin’” with R&B star Brian McKnight.

Back at the cupcake headquarters, disaster for both teams. The women’s chocolate cupcakes don’t rise, prompting an “I told you so” moment from Annie to professional golfer Natalie Gulbis, who was not happy at all. I think Joan Rivers’ description of Annie as Mussolini was pretty accurate. The guys’ cupcakes all bake, but, as Jesse says, the chocolate cupcakes “taste like ass.” The women decide to fill their chocolate cupcake holes with chocolate ganache while the men brush syrup on their cupcakes, hoping to mask the taste.

The men decide to sell cupcakes in Times Square for $20, while the women sell at Penn Station for $5 each. Enter the celebrity endorsements: the Naked Cowboy, Tony Hawk ($1,000) and Donny Deutsch ($10,000) for the men, while the women get Hugh Hefner via a playmate ($5,000), Eric Benet, Kathie Lee Gifford and Annie’s poker posse.

Trump then calls Joan and Herschel, telling them to bring their best cupcake to Crumbs Bakery, where the owners will pick the best cupcake and give the winner $15,000. Andrew takes a random cupcake, while Melissa takes a chocolate one, pissing off Annie. Then Annie refuses to sell a tray of cupcakes to Brande’s friends for $9,000 dollars, setting off Brande.

In the boardroom, Brande gets praised, while Annie and Andrew get bashed by their teams. The women win the taste test and the challenge, beating the men $61,257 to $49,409, giving Joan’s charity, God’s Love We Deliver, over $126,000. Herschel and the other men are left clueless as accusations begin to fly in the boardroom. Dennis comes under fire for not being more active while they were baking or selling, while Herschel gets blamed for not delegating and Andrew is accused of being lazy.

Herschel takes Andrew and Dennis back to the boardroom, where both gang up on Herschel for not being prepared. Herschel and Andrew fight it out about Andrew’s role in the task and the Donald ultimately fires Andrew for not fighting hard enough.
