American Idol Season 8: Second 12 of 36 Performance Predictions

I won’t lie.  Last night’s performance episode of American Idol was rough, from horrible song choices to awkward performances.  Last week, I felt confident in my three picks to move on: Alexis Grace, Danny Gokey, and Michael Sarver.  This week, with the exception of one person, I’m not so sure who will be moving on but I’m going to give it my best shot anyway.  Adam Lambert, and his ridiculous set of pipes, seems like a sure bet to grab a seat on tonight’s results show.  If America picks the right girl then Allison Iraheta will also be joining him but that last spot… well, that’s going to be a tough call.

You don’t have to love Adam Lambert, but you can respect his talent.  It’s rare to hear someone sing the way he does and certainly not on American Idol.  While he wailed “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, I had flashes of Kevin Covais, Jon Peter Lewis, and Sanjaya Malakar.  Adam, in a singoff against any of these former Idols, would be like watching Michael Jordan take on my 3-year-old cousin in basketball.  Lambert, with his Fall Out Boy looks, could front a band like that tomorrow.  I’d continue making a bigger case for him to go through, but I’m not worried about it tonight.

I’m not completely confident in my choice of Allison Iraheta, only because the judges also seemed to like Megan Corkrey.  Iraheta sang “Alone” by Heart (performed last season by Carly Smithson) while Corkrey took on “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae (which has yet to put a contestant through to the Top 12).  Corkrey is the attractive blonde, so if America wants another Kristy Lee Cook, they’ll put her through.  Iraheta has the better pipes and she can rock out and not in the scary way that Amanda Overmeyer did last year.  My original pick, earlier in the season, for a female to go through was Jasmine Murray but she butchered “Love Song”  by Sara Barreilles last night so Iraheta seems like the one that most deserves to continue on in the competition.

I’m scared.  I’m scared because I actually think Nick Mitchell has a chance of moving on tonight.  I’ll bet that he annoys way more people than he entertains.  However, he’s good television.  He’s completely unpredictable on a show where we can almost call everything that’s going to happen from Seacrest revealing the results after the break to the audience booing Simon to Paula mumbling nonsense and falling asleep in her mammoth cup of Coke.  If anyone was else gave a memorable, solid performance, I’d say Nick was done for but he lucked out with his group last night.  In truth, I actually liked Mishovanna Henson’s “Drops of Jupiter” because I thought she made it her own and sang it well but I don’t feel that she’ll pull in enough votes so with Nick/Norman, I go.  I’m not proud of it… but I go.

Final predictions for tonight's results show: Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Nick Mitchell
