Amazing Race 13

Recap of Amazing Race 13, episode 5 by Arthur Perkins

Teams start from a farm about 2.5 hours away from Auckland International Airport and discover on receipt of clue that they are going to Siem Reap, Cambodia. the release times from the pit stop are:

Ken/Tina 603am
Terence/Sarah 819am
Kelly/Christy 932am
Toni/Dallas 1015am
Nick/Starr 1130am
Andrew/Dan 1204pm
Ty/Aja 304pm

Since Ty/Aja arrived at that pit stop after dark, say around 7pm, it appears that it was a 20 hour pit stop. Ken states that it is 220km and he estimates it will take 3 hours (a bit more than I do). With the first reasonable flight departing at 1225 pm to Sydney(and then connecting to Singapore and Siem Reap), only Ken/Tina can make it easily. Terence/Sarah should make it, but they are delayed by Terence getting a ticket from Highway Patrol officers for going 117 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone. It is not clear how much the ticket was, but maybe in the $100 U.S. range since the average speeding ticket in New Zealand is $94. Terence/Sarah make the flight after being told that they can't.

Kelly/Christy, Toni/Dallas and Nick/Starr have no trouble being there for the next suitable flight, a 455pm flight to Brisbane that continues to Singapore and the connects to Siem Reap. Kelly and Christy in a private conservation overheard by the microphone liken Dallas' hair to "Teen Wolf". They do it in such a snarky way that they encourage you to detest them as individuals. Andrew/Dan should have made the airport in ample time to be on this flight but for an unknown reason they are not allowed on it initially. After pleading and reconsideration they get on this flight. So ends the possibility of any drama with respect to which team will finish last.

Although World Race Productions/CBS editing throughout this episode wants to encourage you to believe that Ty/Aja have some chance, they cannot depart before 1155pm and miss the early morning connection to Siem Reap that all other teams are on. That puts them over 5 hours behind the other teams and since the total sum of tasks in Siem Reap was around hours that meant that Ty/Aja were guaranteed last by the time they stepped off the plane. CBS editing made a mighty effort to fool you that they might be able to avoid elimination. All the other 6 teams were starting at approximately the same time.

The first task was a truck fuel stop reached by taxi. The taxi for Kelly/Christy went awry and cost them time. Teams had to hand-crank a pump for diesel fuel oil used by trucks, which Andrew/Dan could not seem to figure out and maybe lost a half hour there. Next was a ride in the back of the truck they had just fueled to the  Siem Reap Dock. On the way Nick, in the lead, stated that he wanted to pull a large branch and put it in the road to hold up other teams "maybe 30 seconds". What a manipulative way to run this race! Teams go into captained motorboats for a ride on Tonle Sap Lake. Nobody had problems with this(all the boats would have been carefully regulated to make sure they go the same speed) except Terence/Sarah, whose boat engine died in sight of their destination. Terence and a crew member poled the boat in while the captain was fixing the engine, but they lost a bit of time that knocked them well below the first place they were in when it happened.

The next task was a DETOUR of Village Life - navigate your boat to get a set of teeth from the dentist, an item from the seamstress, and then go to the basketball court on the water and make one basket by each team member, getting a basketball as a prize
or Village Work - take your boat to fishing grounds and find two traps with fish in them, bring them back and empty them into baskets
Nick/Starr, Toni/Dallas, Anthony/Dan, and Ty/Aja each did Village Work. Ken/Tina, Terence/Sarah, and Kelly/Christy all did Village Life. I did not see an advantage to either one; they looked about even in time to complete.

Next, a tuk tuk drove teams to Angkor Wat, where there was a Roadblock for the selected team member to find the Echo Chamber. Either Andrew or Dan distinguished himself there and Tina had poor performance here. The task was to beat your chest to create an audible echo, then take a stone tablet with the next clue. That clue directed them to the Bayon Temple, which was the pit stop for episode 5. The finishing order was:

Nick/Starr
Toni/Dallas
Terence/Sarah, who were notified of a 30 minute speeding penalty to be applied on release
Ken/Tina
Kelly/Christy
Andrew/Dan
Ty/Aja - eliminated

Ty states that he will be moving to Los Angeles so that his relationship with Aja can flourish.

Previews of next week show that Starr and Dallas are becoming a lot closer. Also, Ken and Tina are having serious relationship issues now that their time in first place is over.
