Recap of America's Got Talent Final 5 Perform by Arthur Perkins

This was the episode America has been waiting for, the final performance of the last 5 competing for the $1,000,000/Las Vegas show prize. What I heard and saw left me with indelible impressions. I will say up front that my prediction that it will be Neal E. Boyd or Queen Emily winning is no longer odds-on. Here are my observations and those of the judges:

Nuttin But Stringz - this was a very high energy performance of one of their own compositions. I was not that impressed by it, but the judges really liked it. They chose a specific type of flamboyant piece and I think they would have been better served with something less flashy. I got the impression that they are all style and little substance. Piers says "I'm looking at the winners right now unless one of the singers does something special (which in my opinion at least one of them will)." David says "Nuttin but Vegas"(what an original line; how many times has he previously used it?). They could win, but I hope not.

Donald Brasswell - he is clearly the least talented of the final 5 and it caught up with him tonight. He sang "You Raise Me Up". My conclusion is that Donald cannot win this competition. His song was OK and nicely sung but that just isn't good enough at this stage in AGT. Sharon said that as good as Donald's voice is he belongs on Broadway. David had the usual trite phrase "you stepped it up tonight", which if that were true could have made a difference. Piers said that Donald had done himself proud. It is clear that based on what the judges are not saying Donald is "dead meat" in this competition right now.

Neal E. Boyd sang the famous tenor aria Nessun Dorma (None Shall Sleep) from Puccini's Turandot. He won back in his element and completely on tonight. I think his performance deserves to win the competition, but we'll see if America votes with me (they did last season). David said that Neal has heart, talent, commitment and humility, and implied that that is a winning combination. Piers said that for the first time ever he completely agrees with what David said. Sharon terms it sensational. The judges liked it as much as I did.

Eli Mattson - sang the Phil Collins song "Against All Odds". I guess he was trying to project a victory for his underdog cause (however, Donald Brasswell has him beat on that), but this song did nothing for me. Piers termed it distinguished and unique. Sharon said good voice, write your own songs, good-looking, young. David says "Take a Look at Me Now." Except for Sharon, the judges are not really impressed by Eli. He has little chance to win.

Queen Emily - sang "Give Me One Moment in Time," like Eli channeling what she hopes to be a victory celebration. I think her voice is fine and her song choice was mediocre. Piers says amazing emotion and adds "I think you are going to have difficulty winning against Nuttin But Stringz." Sharon said "you are a diva; you nailed it(a typical trite phrase usually employed by David)". David says "you will have an amazing career." Reading the tea leaves convinces me that Emily has lost her #2 position and is now running third in this competition.

So, I saw only 2 exceptional performances tonight. To summarize my top choice is Neal E. Boyd who as the best vocal performer is competing against Nuttin but Stringz. It doesn't matter who is 3rd, 4th and 5th, but I see the order as Queen Emily,  Eli Mattson, and Donald Brasswell. The announcement of final results is next Wednesday October 1, and I am guessing it will be at 9pm EDT.

One final comment. The speech by President Bush that started at 9pm postponed the start of America's Got Talent for 15 minutes. However, it finished on time at 10pm, having absorbed 15 minutes of cuts. This was a show with almost zero fluff because they were forced to make those cuts. The succeeded easily, which shows how much fluff is in AGT (and Dancing With the Stars and American Idol and I am sure many other shows). Wouldn't it be nice if that fluff were always cut out by NBC and ABC and FOX?
