I was surprised to see this show open with the results of the 2 hour voting period from last night; NBC usually tries to create more suspense. The results were which 5 of the 10 were staying in the competition (and given the mirror image which 5 were not). It was announced in pairs and until the final one it was fairly obvious from the pairing who would be the stayer. The first 4 winners were Extreme Dance FX, The Cadence, Jessica Price, and Neil E. Boyd. That meant that 4 eliminated were Derrick Barry, Ronny B, Shimshi and DC  Cowboys. On the bubble in the #5 and #6 position were Elite and The James Gang. I could not see Elite getting the nod here and I was right since the 3 judges were directed to choose the winner here (the popular vote must have been very close). Piers and Sharon both threw out plaudits to Elite, but they cast their ballots for The James Gang to provide them with the win. I would say that this vote was a fair assessment by the American public.

During the performances Jerry Springer acknowledged a distinguished guest in the audience, Ozzy Osbourne. We have the next 10 performing in the same format as last night:

Beyond Belief Dance Company - 21 dancers who gave me the impression that their act was "stupid". Piers' main comments were that it was "ropey" and that dancing skill differences among the dancers were too painfully obvious. Sharon termed their act "ballet and gymnastics" and urged them to do more of that at the next level. David said it was clear that they had practiced a lot from their last performance. I think this group does not belong in this competition any longer.

Kazual - 3 brothers and a cousin singing both with a lead singer (rotated all the way around) and also with in 4 part harmony. They sounded better in 4 part harmony except when the one singer who was excellent at lead had that role. When the others sang lead it was painful. The judges picked up on the same reactions. Piers buzzed in and then noted that they had only one decent lead singer. David claimed their poor lead singers were nervous, but Piers disagreed (as I did). At the end all the judges agreed that if this act survives it needs to use only the one good lead singer. I don't think this act can overcome the hole they dug for themselves.

Paul Satos - a 72 year old Frank Sinatra impersonator singing "My Way". You know it would have to be good or he would be in trouble. It was good, but it was far from great. It was not always in tune and Paul had a low energy start before he crescendoed into higher volume levels and energy. Piers stated that Paul has the voice, the charm and the personality to win. David claimed that Paul "is Vegas" and therefore would have no problem being a headliner there. Paul did well enough to get to the next round, but he will not make the final 10.

Zooperstars - the most controversial act in the entire competition. You either love them or hate them. I love them for their energy and goofy routines(an example is a crew member came onstage and was effectively eaten by one of the characters). Piers buzzed them and stated that he wanted to eliminate them with 5 well-placed dart throws. Jerry later said "Piers, you really don't get it; it's an American thing." Sharon is also British and she didn't really get it either, asking if they could sustain a 1.5 hour show in Las Vegas with their silliness. David pointed out that as the only American judge it is not surprising that he was favorable about this act. I hope they survive, but realistically the best they can hope for is #5/#6 position on the bubble.

Wright Kids - three juveniles who all sing very well (although the middle kid is the best on lead voice) and play the banjo, guitar and string bass (which is almost twice the height of the smallest kid who plays it). I had not seen them previously, but was very impressed tonight by their transition from bluegrass to pop. Piers acknowledged that they made a great choice. Sharon said they took a big risk but it paid off. David said he was watching the Partridge Family again (a big plus from his point of view). These kids are very good and will not only move ahead but also make it to the final 10.

David Jens - singer/guitarist who sang what I think was "Someone Watching Over You" very well. He started with the guitar but halfway through ditched it and was much more effective given the backup orchestra with just his voice, which is rich and powerful to my trained ear. Comments by the judges were supportive. David will make it to the next round, but probably not beyond.

Slippery Kittens - burlesque act to "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" where all these women strip down to bikinis. I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Piers stated that when they took off their clothes he wanted them back on, probably because of tatooes now exposed. Sharon said good fun and David got it more right with "somewhat stupid". This act has no chance to move ahead. They deserve to be eliminated.

George the Giant - he built up the suspense by slowing clips of him passing out and being hospitalized after a practice. However, his actual performance was totally anticlimatic, which was the opposite of what he wanted. He was in chains suspended upside down that he had to break out of Houdini style, which he did. However, he overlaid a group of kids batting a pinata which was around his stomach and that led to total confusion and no suspense when he actually freed himself from the chains. He has no chance to move ahead and will be eliminated.

Queen Emily - as with last night they position the best act last. Queen Emily was singing a song I do not know the words to starting with "Ain't No". she was terrific. The judges lauded her with praise. Piers said she was at least equal with Neil E. Boyd's performance and "we have found our superstar". Sharon liked her styling and voice. David said that she is now the frontrunner. I don't agree with all that but I do agree that she is about equal to Neil E. Boyd as the most talented act so far. She should come out on top in the fan voting.

It's time for me to vote right now, since I did not make it in time for last night's voting. It is likely that Queen Emily, Wright Kids, David Jens and Paul Satos will all move ahead. the 5th position will hopefully be Zooperstars and #6 Kazual. We will see. There will be third group of 10 performers on Tuesday night and presumably the last one next Wednesday night. Stay tuned.
