Ethan Petersen Supervising Casting Director for FOX's MasterChef

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Ethan Petersen the Supervising Casting Producer for FOX's new show "MasterChef". Ethan explains what the show is about and some do's and don'ts when it comes to casting.

Q. RealityWanted.com: So tell us more about this new show on FOX and how it is different from other cooking shows?

A. Ethan Petersen, Supervising Casting Producer: MasterChef is a pretty big cooking competition where amatuer chefs get to come and compete. It is the American Idol of the culinary world.

The MasterChef Casting Team at 3Ball

Q. RealityWanted.com: Will there be a series of challenges?

A. Ethan Petersen, Supervising Casting Producer: Yes, the contestants will compete in a series of challenges, I can't tell you the spin on it yet but Gordan Ramsey will be there to help them become great chefs.

Q. RealityWanted.com: What are you looking for in applicants?

A. Ethan Petersen, Supervising Casting Producer: We are looking for people over the age of 18 that have never attend culinary school or worked in a professional kitchen. They must be able to cook though not just mac and cheese. We are looking for people that are passionate about food.

Q. RealityWanted.com: Tell us about what you look for, maybe some Do's and Don'ts

A. Ethan Petersen, Supervising Casting Producer: Make sure to show us your personality. If you are putting your video together make sure to include your family and how you interact with them, it helps us get to know your personality better. Most importantly though just be yourself. Also when you meet with us, do your best to open up and show us who you are.

Q. RealityWanted.com: Where should applicants go to apply to attend one of your open casting calls?

A. Ethan Petersen, Supervising Casting Producer: Have them go to http://www.realitywanted.com/call/6214-now-casting-amateur-chefs-for-masterchef to apply.

Another show like this is the last thing we need. I'm so tired of this whole big deal food thing. Who cares??? Seriously. I think restaurants are way too important and the whole thing bores me to death. Are people serious with all of this ? I think it's a huge joke that we even have to eat every day, I'd rather not have to at all. The last thing I want to do is watch a bunch of people eat and do things with food and be pretentious about it. Meanwhile, people starve. I'd rather watch Minute to Win it then eat a hand grenade. Also, if you've ever worked in some jerk's kitchen, you know it isn't cool at all and I'd rather go to prison and eat the same slop every day and die old than watch that kind of thing for fun.

I went to Naperville Chicago and submitted my dish I made minnie cheese burgers homemade blue cheese dressing fried sweet potato french fries and also fried pickles that were bread in a home made batter. I stood in line for 4 hours in the cold but it was all worth it.I had a 4 and half hour drive from St. louis to the suberbs of Chicago even though some of the casting team did not know that some people were there and all ready had applied for the show on Reality Wanted I made my present know by my dish and extraordinary platting skills. I was number 183 Chi. I'm hopping to here from them soon I gave it my best .

Fantastic news! Despite not getting a phone call when I "thought" they were making the decisions; I received an email saying that I had impressed the food judges and the casting folks....and was asked to submit a home video! WAHOO! Well...the home kitchen video is now done. Aside from the amateur video, all went very well for our small dinner party of 25 for the cooking and filming. I stepped outside of the box and tried a new and uncommon side dish to complement my main that no one that evening had ever had before. I was asked to write down the ingredients and recipe for a few (who are very good cooks in thier own right) as they left. I call that a huge success! Whatever happens, it's been a fun experience thus far! It's given me cause for at least two more dinner parties with friends and family and I've stepped outside my comfort zone to learn some new dishes and skills too. I can only imagine how great the learning experience and the competition will be! And even better, when I win the title of MasterChef! NORTH WEST FOODIES ROCK!

Tried out for the show in Kirkland, WA. An absolute blast! A fairly large crowd, but all was handled well and things moved pretty smooth. Part of me is glad the weather held, but I would have stood for hours in freezing rain to prove how competative I am! The judges seemed to like my dish, luke warm though it was after the wait. The interview went well too. No call....so sad. I was really up for the competition. That's OK. I'll kick some culinary ass next round and get my slot to prove that I have what it takes to be the MasterChef!!! The title is mine!!

Well, I got a chance to attend the casting call in Manhasset, NY and had a blast. I managed to make the VIP list, as soon as I got there, there wasn't a long waiting line. I gave my best and my all and liked the director I saw. She was great. I felt for the one guy who was standing next to me because his dish never got tested because the judge told him it smelt funny and also that he had a broken shell and that you just can't serve broken shellfish (the guy made paella), so he got there and didn't even get the chance to get his food sampled.....what a shame!! I can speak for me and just hope that I made an impression, enough to be considered for the show. I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal Frank, that has to suck eggs!! There was a long line of people for the casting and it was cold as hell, so I can imagine. Good luck to all applying!

You know I fell like I been shafted ! Today was the casting call in Newton MA and I got there at 1:30 pm, the casting opened at 1pm. I waited there for 6 1/2 hours, twice someone came out once at 3pm and another time at 4:45 and said don't worry to the people out there everyone will be seen ! That was a lie a lie it was 22* outside very cold and we where all out there freezing!!!! Not waiting inside but outside and thats fine but how cold hearted can these people be at 7:15 with about 30 people left, there was alot more but they left because they where cold very cold ! The person comes out and saids they are not seeing anymore people after they told us the people that are here will be seen at 3:00pm, four hours later just close the door and say goodbye. Bullshit thats wrong ! The people running the show their should be asamed to them self. It wasnt fear and life isnt fear but come on realy! They came out twice to count the people and tell us we would be seen and then do that, it's just wrong. Do me a favor stay outside for 7 hours in the freezing cold and see how you feel! Atleast let the people know we will be waiting outside so we can be prapered for the weather! I am pissed and so are the 35 people who where left in the cold ! American idol has 1000 of people trying out and if your there you will be seen! Sorry for the people who where casting inside nice and warm that they had to stay a little later, BOO HOO! If half of the people had there profile then before they got there maybe it would of went faster! These people don't care about you and that's ashame! Thank you for my cold and 7 hours of my life !
