Naked and Afraid: the Swarm

When the production crew heads out on a final scout, they are attacked by thousands of africanized bees without warning. Suffering hundred of stings and are at risk of kidney failure and asphyxiation. Two days later the crew continues with production and the survivalists are still game. Isla San Jose has dense jungle, crocodiles, 10ft boas and giant cockroaches. The tiniest predators are the insects including sand flies that carry disease. And don't forget those bees!

Tara is a 40 year old former wilderness therapist from Colorado with a PSR score of 6.8. She has never set foot in a jungle but at least has brought along a bow-drill.

Dustin is a 30 year old military vet from Nebraska who works in an ammunition factory. Guns won't help you here, buddy. His PSR begins at 6.1 and he brings along a pot. "Be careful of the bees... good luck" says his guide as he makes his exit.

Although the jungle is providing shelter, the building materials are thorny and sharp. And alas, Tara is already being affected by the insects. Plus we can see the giant cockroaches crawling all over their camp while they sleep, forcing them to spend the night on a rock in the river. Who's jealous? Also, who's jealous of Dustin looking at the bug bite in Tara's butt crack? These poor participants.

Before they are able to make fire, they find that they are feeling the effects of hydration. They decide to drink straight from the river to quench their thirst. Now they are looking for food more sufficient than tree nuts. Unfortunately they may be the food for the bees in the nest not too far from their camp site. In the meantime Dustin just wants to get away and/or take naps and let the fire go out while Tara aims to catch some shrimp. Luckily they find a termite nest which are rich in protein and fat, almost twice as many calories as the equivalent of beef.

Imagine the worst rash you've ever had in your life an multiply it by 1000. That's what Tara is experiencing from the insects. Using mud made from ash can help but surely only Benadryl can help this kind of reaction. Yeeowza! What's more concerning is how thin Tara is. Even Dustin is willing to do whatever it takes to get food for her including killing a boa for their pre-extraction feast.

Extraction is a trek through jungle, 6 miles of river, 3 miles of mangrove mud and trek to the beach... then they have to swim to safety. Don't want to make it too easy for them. In the end, Dustin lost 25 pounds and his PSR stayed at 6.1. Tara lost 16 pounds and her PSR rose to 7.6.
