Naked and Afraid: Botswana Breakdown

By Ashley Thompson

Ashley, a 25 year old bartender from Rhode Island meets Michael, a 32 year old banker from Washington in Botswana. A semi-arid, brutally hot climate with razor sharp thorns and void of resources. Especially now at the end of a long dry season. They will be battling aggressive predators such as elephants and hyenas searching for water. So, naturally they set up shelter near a watering hole... because nothing is as fun as possibly getting trampled by elephants who can smell water from 3 miles away.

Ashley has a PSR of 4.7 and brings along a fire starter (or so we see, but aren't really shown), and Michael has a PSR of 5.9 and brings along a machete. Unfortunately no one brings along a pot to boil water.

Only 5 ours in and Ashley is complaining of nausea and dehydration. She's not too dehydrated to pee in the middle of the night, though. Scared of the loud animal noises all around their camp, she decides to urinate right outside their shelter. Nasty or smart? I mean, she's basically marking her territory, right?

After taking their chances by drinking water from a shallow pond, Ashley is sent to a nearby camp and evaluated by a local doctor. Diagnosed with nausea, dizziness and vomiting, which are clear signs she may have an infection, most likely caused by infected water. Michael is now alone on day 3, and waiting to get sick, too. But he does something I've been waiting to see all season, he uses the burlap bag as a water filter.

Even after finding a pot to boil water in (that's not suspect at all, producers), two bird eggs, numerous termites (high in fat with more protein per ounce than chicken or beef), and grasshoppers, his kidneys are shutting down. He finds a localized herbal remedy called Devil's claw that he subsequently overdoses on, lowering his blood pressure and blood sugar levels. He knew there was a possibility of this happening so I'm surprised he didn't consume a smaller amount. With all of the problems he has faced, and thanks to a dream about his deceased brother, Michael decides to formally tap out on day 12.

In only 12 days he lost 20 pounds. But leaving so quickly brought his PSR down to 5.7, not a huge decrease. Ashley, however, dropped her PSR down to 3.7. Better luck next time, guys.
