The DWTS Finale began last night, and we watched the shocking elimination of James and Peta. Candace Cameron Bure seemed just as surprised as we were. But let's be honest, the real heavyweights here are Derek Hough with Paralympian, Amy Purdy, and Maksim Chmerkovskiy with Olympian, Meryl Davis.

The two gold medal pairs received perfect scores in the first round of dances. This whole season hasn't really seemed like a competition because of the standard set by Maks and Meryl, but Derek and Amy have defied the odds and it is a truly remarkable thing to watch them dance so beautifully.

The freestyle rounds last night changed the whole game. Meryl and Maksim performed an absolutely flawless dance with immaculate choreography by Maksim. They blew the judges away, "First of all, I think you guys should get married. We're all thinking it, right?" Carrie Ann gushed. Yes. Bruno is never short on words, but simply stated, "And it keeps getting better. What you two have created is as close as it gets to a flawless work of art."

Amy and Derek then defied gravity with another breathtaking dance that had Amy literally flying through the air. Maks and Meryl chalked up another perfect score, while Derek and Amy fell a point shy with a 29.

Tonight, one dancing duet will take home the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. Derek has won many times, but Maksim has never ever won the Mirrorball. The Freestyle winner almost ALWAYS wins the title. If so, the stars have finally aligned for Maksim.
