The Voice Playoffs: the Playmakers

Yay for team Usher! They all did an amazing job in the finals tonight. I was so pleased when TJ chose "Tell Me Something Good" by Chaka Khan. This was such a bold song, and of course, it's always more interesting to hear a female song covered by a male voice. Usher gave TJ some good advice during training that really paid off in his performance. TJ was able to use his voice to replicate the horns in the song. That may sound weird, but with that technique he lit up the stage.

Melissa took a huge risk in choosing Beyonce's "Halo." It's a song that almost everyone knows by one of the greatest vocalists in the world. Melissa did have a few technical errors in her breathing, but it was still a solid performance, as Blake said. What I did like was that she chose to switch up a few of the notes. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to sing a Beyonce song, just like Beyonce sings it. I don't know, that's just my take on it. Apparently Melissa met her coach Usher, once before going on The Voice. During a concert at Madison Square Garden, he pulled her on stage and ever since then she told herself that she had to meet him again. That's awfully romantic. I'm sure it made Usher's decision tonight a bit harder.

Ushers team member, Stevie Jo exemplifies why you should never judge a book by its cover. Both his parents were rockers and with that long hair and edgy style you would assume that he wanted to be one too. Au contraire! Stevie actually wants to be an R&B singer. Usher noted that Stevie had to learn the essence of R&B singing and bring a little more soul to the notes he was hitting. Tonight he sang "The Thrill is Gone," by BB King. Overall I would say the performance was a success. Good job, Stevie.

Bria Kelly on the other hand, when she sings you just get lost for words. This senior in high school has the biggest, most soulful, most rock, and raspy voice on team Usher, and it's beautiful. Tonight she performed "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones, and moved all the judges. This one is a shining star. Usher was too wise to allow the other coaches the opportunity to steal her.

Last performance of the night was Josh Kaufman, who Usher stole from Adam during the last battle rounds. With his wife and three children in mind, Josh sang "It Will Rain" by Bruno Mars, which was a phenomenal choice for him. Josh is such a sweet well put together guy, but I still wouldn't expect that big soulful voice to come out of him. He is absolutely incredible and everyone recognizes it.

Finally some choices had to be made. Out of the five, two had to go. Here's his line up in the order that he chose: Bria Kelly, Josh, and TJ. That's a pretty strong team right there. Let's see what Blake brings us Monday!
