Jason Case and Amy Diaz, winners of The Amazing Race Season 23

by Gina Scarpa

Heading into the final leg last night on The Amazing Race, Jason Case said, of his partnership with girlfriend Amy Diaz, that they were one of the best teams to ever run in the competition. He put his money where his mouth was and it paid off (literally) when the pair were the first to reach the finish line and claim the $1 million grand prize. We talked to the couple today about their victory, their competitive side, and what's next in our exclusive interview.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Besides your competitive spirit, fans really seemed to gravitate towards you as a team to root for because of your relationship with one another. What was it like to watch that play out on tv?
A. Amy: You know what? It was really refreshing to see because as we were running, we thought we were worse than what we actually were. Seeing how we handled ourselves, it was really sweet to see that we weren't as bad as we thought. We were being really hard on ourselves.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Heading into the final leg, Nicole and Travis wanted Leo and Jamal out because they thought they couldn't trust them. Tim and Marie wanted them out because they were a physical threat. Why did you want them gone?
A. Amy: At that point, it was a combination of both. We had raced with Travis and Nicole most of the time.
A. Jason: Everybody wanted them out! They made manipulative moves that gave them no competitive edge in the race. There were things that the audience didn't even get to see that made us say, "It's time for them to go!"

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When you're running the race, it's tough to appreciate everywhere you've been. Do you feel like you took it all in or did it hit you more when you watch each episode?
A. Amy: Watching it back, we obviously got a little more of it. A lot of times, it was hard to see anything. The best one was definitely Portugal at the top of the castle, and we got to see the view. Watching the race, to look at the pictures on CBS, you're like, "Wow that was really amazing!"

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How were you feeling going into the last leg in Alaska?
A. Jason: At that point in time, over-exhausted, stressed out... we definitely had to persevere through that leg. Amy had a sprained ankle she was struggling with. I thought that's why we're one of the stronger teams because we did win by a considerable team.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Are there other strong teams from previous seasons that you looked up to?
A. Amy: We definitely wanted to be like Dave and Rachel (Season 20). They broke a record and we wanted to do the same. Unfortunately, we matched the record for most second place wins.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Now that the show is over, are you planning on traveling back to any of the countries that you visited?
A. Jason: Absolutely! It was a very humbling experience. To see the world like that makes you feel like you want more. The Amazing Race is not a vacation! We weren't lounging around and enjoying the sites. To go back and see it and enjoy it is something we definitely want to do.
