Vytas Baskauskas of Survivor Blood Vs Water

by Gina Scarpa

It's really no surprise that Vytas Baskauskas was a threat in the game of Survivor this season. Not only is his brother Aras a former winner, but Vytas was a huge physical threat himself - and a smooth talker as well. Once the tribes merged, Tyson saw the opportunity to take out the brothers, beginning with Aras. He lost his first Redemption Island challenge, while Vytas was eliminated the next week after Tina and Laura formed a quick alliance to get him out. We chatted with Vytas today about rivalries, regrets, and redemption in our exclusive interview.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Coming into the game, you know you're a strong player, your brother has won before... you must have been feeling confident, right?
A. Vytas: You know, I was feeling confident. I just knew it was going to be a lot more complex this season. Although I was a fan, and I was worried.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Even though you wanted to play the game with your brother, you guys were obviously very competitive which we saw play out over the season. Do you feel like people on opposite tribes aggravated that dynamic between you?
A. Vytas: It did! At first, I wanted to beat Aras so bad and we kept losing. Tadhana kept freakin' losing! The competitive side of me just kept coming out. Especially when that cheap shot came out, that was decades of competitiveness

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You really talked your way out of a few tribal council eliminations. How did you do that?
A. Vytas: I had my back against the wall but I saw the fissures, I saw the cracks. I presented myself as a trusted alternative. I was lucky to have a relationship with Katie, I befriended Tina, and then I befriended Monica. I worked hard to stay alive and that was almost my downfall at the merge. I get to the merge and won immunity and I was like, "Hey, I'm set! I got immunity, and I'm with my brother."

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: One of the things that benefited you with the women was your ability to share your story and your past with them. What's been the result of that honesty?
A. Vytas: Yeah, you know, as I was playing, I didn't think about things that would air and how many millions of people would see that story. Some people don't understand and people say, "Once a junkie, always a junkie." It's embarrassing sometimes, I'm a math professor at a college. In the end, I'm not ashamed of where I come from. I'm proud of what I accomplished.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: There's a lot we don't see in between the immunity challenge and tribal council. Was Aras's blindside really a blindside or did you have an inkling of what was going on?
A. Vytas: Complete shocker! Like I mentioned a moment ago, I had the immunity necklace around me. I decided to take the afternoon off, and Aras was convinced Tyson and Gervase were with us. For a few hours, I stopped playing the game and the first two times Aras's names was read, I wasn't surprised. That third time, I was completely blown away.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: From Laura's standpoint, I can understand why she helped Tina at Redemption Island but you must've been mad!
A. Vytas: Yeah, I mean, I was pissed. It's never really happened like that before on Survivor. People shout help from the stands. Laura was whispering help from a solution manual after having done it. Good job on their part just staying alive. I felt hosed, I was bitter.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Who's a bigger threat, someone like Tyson who is calling the shots or someone like Hayden who is playing a quiet game?
A. Vytas: I mean if you look at the game up until this point, I would say Tyson is the much bigger threat. He's directing the flow of the game. He's been making strategic decisions. He's been doing a good job of making other people think they're part of it. I just wonder if he'll be able to keep the target off of his back. People have to make a move and get him out. What has Hayden really done up until this point? He's stayed under the radar but that's not going to get you jury votes.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: After living with Aras's Survivor experience for so many years, how would you sum up your own?
A. Vytas: There was so much game left in me when I left. I've been a fan of the show for so long. To have Jeff hand me my buff, snuff my torch, win an immunity challenge, win a food challenge... I feel like I got the whole experience.
