The Voice Season 5: Top 8 Perform

by Jessica Blackwell

The Top 8 performed tonight as the competition heats up! Cee-lo only had one team member left, and at any point any coach can be knocked out of the competition. Here's how they did:

James

He decided to take a big risk this week and perform a difficult song - "Somebody to Love" by Queen. He took the stage in a tuxedo and bow tie and performed the song with what looked like a bunch of James Wolpert groupies and did his thing! James reminds me of Michael Bublé, and I think he will go far.

Tessanne

We've seen Tessanne tackle pretty much every genre - except the music from her culture. Tonight, she changed all that when she performed Gwen Stefani's "Underneath It All" which has major reggae undertones. I love when she really puts her voice on display and belts it out, but she really came alive on stage when she was able to do her own kind of music.

Caroline

After lading in the bottom three last week, Caroline has much to prove this time around. She decided to go out on a limb and perform something unexpected - Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days". It was her edgiest performance to date, and I'm betting that Cee-lo wasn't willing to take any changes since she's the last team member he has left. She may not have the vocal chops that Florence has, but she held her own.

Cole

LIke Tessanne, Cole wanted to get back to his roots, but with a county song. Blake was looking for a stripped down performance that showcased his heart and soul. Singing "I'll Still Believe" he blew the crown away with just his voice. He had four acoustic band members on stage, but that was it. Up until this point, I wasn't a fan of his, but now I am now!

Matthew

Christina is known for her theatrics, and this week, she brought in her choreographer to take Matthew to the next level. He chose "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons because it embodies exactly how he feels right now. He rocked his performance, proving that he's one of the most versatile artists in the competition.

Will

There have been many soulful performances in this competition, but none of them came from Will. He chose one of Christina's favorites, "At Last" by Etta James. I'm a fierce defender of classics like this one because I don't think just anyone can perform them. I'll be honest, I didn't think it was a good song choice for him, but I was pleasantly surprised. I still would have rathered Jacquie done this song, but tonight Will showed us just how much he can blow. Adam called him ambitious and

Ray

I'm still surprised that Ray made it this far in the competition. Early on, he really wasn't that strong of a contender but then he turned a corner. He has immense potential, and tonight he took the stage singing "Gimme Some Lovin" and showed of his amazing ability to perform.

Jacquie

Christina is a smart girl - she's going to keep Jacquie belting out crazy vocals right to the top!! She selected "Who's Loving You" by the Jackson Five for Jacquie and yet again SHE KNOCKED OUR SOCKS OFF. Good lord, this girl can BLOW!!!!! The performance started out acapella and dark with just Jacquie and the microphone and moved into a heart belting, jaws on the floor performance. Judging by the smug looks Christina had on her face after the performance, she knows what we know - they might win this thing!

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm EST on NBC.
