Ashley DuBose of The Voice Season 5

by Gina Scarpa

Very early into Ashley DuBose's blind audition performance, the coaches were dying to have her on their team. She ended up going with Adam Levine, which proved to be a wise choice. Ashley went on to win her battle round against Justin Blake, and Adam has every bit of confidence she'll continue to do well in the competition. Ashley talked to us today about versatility, staying calm under pressure, and getting closer to achieving her dream on The Voice.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Your voice had me right from the beginning of "Diamonds" and clearly, had the coaches too. What did you think of the four chair turnaround for you?

A. Ashley: I thought it was unbelievable, it felt like a dream! I went in hoping for one, and I didn't expect to get all four. It was a moment of, "Wow, this is really happening!"

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You had everybody fighting to have you on their team. How did you end up choosing Adam?
A. Ashley: You know, they didn't show everything because of time but he fought the most and the hardest for me. They all had wonderful things to say and I was really humbled and honored to have all four musicians of their caliber fighting over me. Going into it, I thought for sure I knew I was going to go with Adam but I started entertaining the idea of being on all of their teams. I narrowed it down to Cee-Lo and Adam, but I went with my gut.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You went up against Justin Blake in the battle round. How did you feel about the song "Just A Fool"? Is it hard not to have that control over what you sing?
A. Ashley: Yeah, both Justin and I had never heard the song before. I liked the song, I did. The only thing is I had to adjust my singing style to fit the range, emotion, and tone of the song. That's difficult. Not knowing the song, it took some time to learn it and not having the song be my choice stretched me to work harder. There's some high notes. Christina is a powerhouse singer, so I really had to work. It was the same thing for Justin, we both had things to work on.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When Adam named you the winner, he said that he felt you were prepared to deal with what's coming ahead in the competition. Do you think he was talking more about your talent or your ability to stay calm under pressure?
A. Ashley: I think the latter, my ability to stay calm under pressure. I do a good job making it seem that I'm calm but inside, I'm a nervous mess just like anybody else. I think our performance was a close call and I wish America could've seen it. I wish I could've seen it because in that moment, I don't even remember how everything went. I thought Justin had a good chance of winning and I thought it would be the story of the underdog. As it turned out, it worked in my favor. I think my composure, even under pressure, serves me well.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When you have as big of a reaction as you did in your blind audition, do you think about how to top each performance?
A. Ashley: Oh yeah! Now, what else do you have? It's a challenge for myself. I don't want to lay out all my cards and pull everything out. As a versatile artist, I like to listen to a bunch of different music and sing a bunch of different styles. I am looking forward to seeing what my coach has in mind for me because I'll try it all!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Adam's very competitive and takes the competition pretty seriously. What's it been like to work with him as your coach?
A. Ashley: He's been very easygoing and down to earth. He makes you feel comfortable and that's the most important thing, just getting over those nerves. Once he set the tone, it was easy to work with him, take advice, and take constructive criticism. He's done a great job of coaching!
