The Voice Season 5: The Battle Rounds Part 1 - Briana and Jacquie

by Jessica Blackwell

Tonight, the really difficult part begins for the contestants. They've proven that they have enough pipes to turn the chairs of the über talented judges, but now they have to show they have what it takes to go up against the competition as they battle a member of their own teams! The coaches brought in some reinforcements: Ed Sheeran, Cher, Miguel, and Ryan Tedder all joined the show as additional coaches. Here are the best performances from the premiere of the battle rounds.

Grey vs Nic Hawk

For his first pairing, Adam chose these two to perform Jessie J's Domino Grey thought she would have the upper hand since she performs it with her band every weekend, and because well, she's a girl. Nic gave her a run for her money however, with his unique vocals. Adam chose Grey as the winner, and Blake snatched Nic up! An unlikely pairing, but it could work.

Amber Nicole vs. Timyra-Joi

Both of these ladies have very strong vocals, most likely due to the fact that Amber's sister is a vocal coach, and Timyra resided with hers! They're both young, African-American, and beautiful singers. Christina gave them Beyonce's "Listen" to perform, and ambitious choice for sure, but these ladies rose to the occasion. In the words of Carson, they brought the roof down! Their performance literally brought Christina to tears and she chose Amber to move on with her team. Shockingly, no one stole Timyra, so she's headed home.

Anthony Paul vs. Caroline Pennell

Cee-lo gave this pair a stripped down version of Justin Beiber's "As Long as You Love Me", a song that was definitely more Anthony's genre. Besides being young, these two contestants have absolutely nothing in common, but they came together to make beautiful music. Caroline made the song her own, and Anthony toned down his usually strong voice to match the soft notes. This was by far, my favorite performance of the night. Cee-lo chose Caroline as the winner for this battle round, and Christina pressed her button to move Anthony on the knockout rounds.

Donna Allen vs Tessanne Chin

Both of these ladies have amazing strengths in different ways. Donna prides herself on being the oldest in the competition, and has a powerful voice to rival some of the greats (Tina Turner and Patti Labelle come to mind). Tess brings a smoothness and uniqueness to the stage that is is unparalleled. Pairing two powerhouses together was really smart, and Adam gave them one of my favorite songs, "Next to Me" by Eméli Sande. They did an amazing job!  Donna fell to match Tessanne's coolness, and Tessanne rose to Donna's powerful range. Adam chose Tessanne, but NO ONE stole Donna! I was totally surprised, because her voice is amazing.

Briana Cuoco vs. Jacquie Lee

You only need one word to describe this battle - EPIC! Christina paired these ladies together because their styles are influenced by rock and soul. Singing "House of the Rising Sun" they LIT THE STAGE ON FIRE!!! They both have such powerful voices and the collaboration was amazing. None of the judges wanted to pick a winner for this battle, including Christina, but choose she did. Jacquie will be moving on in the competition with Christina, but Cee-lo and Blake pressed their buttons lightening fast! Briana is moving on with Team Blake!!

Tonight's performances were amazing, but tomorrow night's rounds boast even better performances according to the previews. Stay tuned!
