The Top 10 of SYTYCD Season 10

by Gina Scarpa

Other than Vegas Week, the Top 10 performance episode of So You Think You Can Dance is always the most highly anticipated for me. Besides the fact that all the dancers remaining will head out on tour, all-stars are brought back to perform! I will never turn down an opportunity to see tWitch, Neil, Robert, Kathryn, Comfort, and the like perform again on that stage.

First thing's first, though. After a beautiful opening number with rocking chairs, choreographed by Christopher Scott (who is on FIRE this season), the bottom four are named. Since Tucker couldn't dance last week, he's automatically up for elimination, and Nico, Jenna, and Makenzie join him there. Since we've already seen them dance their solos, and with an action packed night, the judges decide to just enjoy the routines. Good call!

Here are the standouts of the evening, though I have to say it hurts my heart to leave Paul and Witney off the Top 5 list. Honorable mention!!

5. Jasmine and all-star Marko: Jazz by Ray Leeper
Jasmine has always been one of my favorites and had me this week the minute she stepped onto the stage in that tuxedo. She transforms with each routine from The Giving Tree to wild west hip hop to this androgynous, funky jazz piece. Upstaging Marko is no easy feat but Jasmine does it effortlessly. Can someone teach me how to have moves like that?!

4. Fik-Shun and all-star Melanie: Jazz by Mandy Moore
Yes, Fik-Shun has a long way to go at times when it comes to technique, in comparison to the dancers around him. However, you cannot deny his incredible journey throughout this competition. To dance next to season 8 winner Melanie Moore is no small task, but he definitely delivers. Look, the best dancer almost never wins and we know that. While Fik-Shun may not get everything right technically, he's far and away winning in the personality and personal growth categories.

3. Jenna and all-star Neil: Contemporary by Mandy Moore
Jenna is always so fiery and feisty that it's great to see a softer and more vulnerable side of her. Plus, I will never NEVER argue with seeing Neil Haskell dance. The two came together for a Mandy Moore piece about a couple who is breaking up. Their fluidity of motion and the connection that they shared was perfection on that stage. Besides, who can't relate to having a hard time letting go of someone you love?

2. Aaron and all-star Kathryn: Contemporary by Stacey Tookey
Aaron is just the surprise of the season! This guy wasn't even supposed to be here and he blows me away each week, with each routine. I have loved his partnership with Jasmine, but after he took the stage with Kathryn, I forgot all about them as a couple... almost! Kathryn has grown immeasurably since her audition in season 6. She and Aaron took my breath away, and I'm left wondering who I can call about seeing them dance together every week from this point on!

1. Tucker and all-star Robert: Contemporary choreographed by Travis Wall
You know it's going to be a good routine when the tears start flowing before anyone has danced a single step. Travis returns to SYTYCD with an emotional routine about two brothers, one who has hit rock bottom and the other who is trying desperately to help him. The story is rooted in truth, as something has happened between Travis and his brother Danny Tidwell (season 2). The judges don't go into any further detail about it, except to send their love to both men. With Tucker and Robert bonding over the near-death experienced they've both had, the piece left everyone breathless... and saved Tucker from elimination!

At the end of the evening, Nigel let Nicol and Makenzie know that their time in the competition had come to an end.  At least they made the tour!

So You Think You Can Dance airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on FOX.
