Top 14 on So You Think You Can Dance Season 10

by Gina Scarpa

This week's episode of So You Think You Can Dance kicks off with a Top 14 routine choreographed by Sonya Tayeh and Dmitry Chaplin. I am loving this teaming up of choreographers for the openers this season! Cat names the bottom six: Jasmine, Alan, Alexis, Curtis, Makenzie, and Nico. The judges don't want to see the guys perform, and immediately decide to save Makenzie. From there, it was on to the routines and here were the five standouts of the night, though it pained me to leave Amy and Fik-Shun off my list this week.

5. Alexis and Nico: Contemporary choreographed by Sonya Tayeh
Sonya just has a way of pulling out the best people, as we're about to see with Makenzie and Paul as well. In this piece, about the end of a love affair, the pair really delivers on both technique and emotion. It is too bad that Alexis got the jive last week as contemporary is really where she shines.

4. Makenzie and Paul: Jazz choreographed by Sonya Tayeh
Makenzie and Paul turn up the sexy in this jazz routine that not only puts their dance capabilities on display, but their athleticism as well. When it's over, Sony punches the sky while Nigel reiterates why they saved Makenzie. What is America not seeing in this girl?!

3. Hayley and Leonardo: Argentine Tango choreographed by Miriam and Leonardo
Curtis suffered a shoulder injury this week, forcing him to sit on the sidelines for the three routines he was supposed to perform. That left Hayley to tango with choreographer Leonardo Barrionuevo, which is both a blessing and a curse. Sure, she had a superstar partner but she also had... a superstar partner! Hayley really needed to deliver here and she sure did.

2. Jasmine and Aaron: Contemporary choreographed by Justin Giles
One of my favorite books growing up was Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree" and Justin Giles paid wonderful tribute to it with last night's routine. In the piece, Jasmine tried desperately to hold on to her last apple and Aaryn tried to selfishly take it away from her. Working with a prop is never easy but as Mary Murphy said, that apple almost became part of Jasmine. Aaryn showed a wonderfully soft side, and continues to prove that the judges did the right thing by inviting him to be part of Season 10.

1. Jasmine, Aaron, Paul, Alexis, Tucker, Amy and Fik-Shun: Contemporary choreographed by Bonnie Story
All hail Bonnie Story! The seasoned, award winning choreographer is FINALLY a part of So You Think You Can Dance and makes quite an entrance. In her routine, about those who bully and those who have been bullied, she transports both the dancers and the audience to an emotional place. Bullying has touched everyone's lives in one way or another, and Bonnie was able to beautifully communicate the pain it causes. Please tell me this is just the beginning for seeing her on this show!

With Curtis not being able to dance this week, it really left no choice for the judges when it came time to make a decision about the guys. Standing next to Jasmine, though, it was pretty clear Alexis's time in the competition had come to an end too. With a heavy heart, Nigel announced that they were sending the two tappers home. Now, it's all on Aaryn to represent!
