Tawnya Reynolds of The Voice Season 4

by Gina Scarpa

Tawnya Reynolds came to The Voice this season from Nashville, TN, where she's been pursuing a music career for over a decade.  Feeling like the show was the perfect platform to help her get noticed, she certainly achieved that goal immediately in her blind audition.  Her performance of "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" by Ed Bruce got Usher, Shakira, and Adam to turn around, and she chose to join Team Shakira.  Tawnya went on to advance in the battle round last week and we talked to her today in an exclusive interview about what being on The Voice has meant to her.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You moved to Nashville to pursue your music career, but you said on the show that things weren't panning out for you so far. What has the experience there been like for you?
A. Tawnya: Being in Nashville is a game of networking and there's no plan, there's no booklet on how to do anything. You come here and you try to make friends and get in with a crowd that can get you to do what you love. It's impossible to know what to do and that's why they call it a Ten Year Town and for some of us, it's a little longer. It's not always easy, but it's worth it.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What pushed you to try out for The Voice?
A. Tawnya: The concept of The Voice is brilliant. The fact that they go on your talent alone is completely foreign to me. Everything is about your look and how you're packaged. It's an amazing concept.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I've always loved the fact that the show is positive and everyone who is on it deserves to be there. Is that what drew you to it as well?
A. Tawnya: Absolutely! The Voice is a show that doesn't make fun of people. It doesn't exploit people for what's funny about them or what could get ratings, other than their talent. The Voice is about trying to find someone that no one is listening to and give them the opportunity they've been looking for.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You had three of the coaches turn around for you in your blind audition. Did you have an idea of who you wanted to go with or was it an impulsive decision?
A. Tawnya: I made the decision I made completely off the cuff. I thought Blake would be the only one that would turn for me, if anyone at all, and it ended up being the complete opposite. Something about Shakira told me to go for her.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: She seems so passionate about her team members. What has she been like thus far?
A. Tawnya: Passionate is a perfect word for her. True to my gut feeling about her, that's exactly who she is. She's in to win it, that's for sure! I don't think she's ever done anything less than 100%.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your mindset during the battle round?
A. Tawnya: My mindset was to completely be in the moment. I knew I was fighting for my life but I had to make it believable. I wanted to go out there and do me.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What advice were you given you feel helped you get the win there?
A. Tawnya: The advice from Shakira was priceless in that she said to take everything I do and amplify it, to not hold back. That's exactly what I did.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What do you need to do now in order to win over both the judges and the people at home?
A. Tawnya: Oh man! You never know what's going to make it to air so you have to make sure that every time you get an opportunity to speak or sing, that you don't hold back. When I go out there, it's gonna be balls to wall, so to speak! There's no other option other than to nail it!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you feel like, no matter what happens, The Voice has positively impacted your career?
A. Tawnya: Absolutely! This show is a platform that is like no other. There's other shows out there but this is the one I'm on and the one I'm worried about. This is the one that'll hopefully get people to notice what I've been doing for so long. This could do wonders for my career. I'm definitely going to take every opportunity!
