The Voice Season 4

by Jessica Blackwell

Tonight was the first round of the battle rounds and it was time for these artists to prove that they can go up against the competition! They managed to impress the judges with the blind auditions, but now they had to compete against a member of their own team and fight for a spot.

Here are the duos that yielded the best performances of the night:

Amber vs. Sasha

Adam paired Amber Carrington and Sasha Allen together for Pink's new hit, "Try". Both ladies have great voices in their own way. Amber is singing in memory of her deceased mother and Sasha is tying to make it for her kids. I think they both did great, but Amber's voice really shined on this casual rock song. I definitely think that Sasha is the better singer, but her voice was almost too powerful for this song. Adam had a hard decision, but he chose Amber to stay on his team. Thanks to the new twist that started last season, as soon as Sasha was a free agent, Shakira grabbed her up so it's not the end of the road for her!

Jess vs Taylor

Usher tried out some uh, rather unconventional coaching methods, specifically standing away from his team during rehearsals and not moving closer until they impressed him enough. His ballsy methods sure seemed to work because they certainly brought it to the stage, singing "You Know I'm No Good". I'm a big fan of Taylor's, but Jess seemed to bring more personality to the performance and Usher agreed because he chose her to move on with his team. Blake stole Taylor at the last minute, so she's moving on in the competition with his team.

Christian vs The Swon Brothers

Poor Christian had to compete against two singers, but he held his own pretty well. The trio sang "I Won't Back Down", a song that seemed to fit the mood of the battle rounds perfectly.  In the end, Blake chose the Swon Brothers and unfortunately, no one stole Christian. I still give him credit for going against two people though, and it was a great performance.

Judith vs Karina

I don't know about you, but after the blind auditions, I couldn't wait to hear Judith sing again! Adam chose a James Brown classic, "It's a Man's World" for these ladies to perform. All I have to say is DAMN!!!! These ladies brought the HEAT to the stage, causing Adam to declare it the best battle performance in The Voice history and garnish them a standing ovation from all the judges! Poor Karina had to be intimidated to perform with Judith, an undeniable powerhouse, but she picked up everything Judith threw down! In the end, Adam chose to stick with Judith, but Shakira snatched her Karina up, so it's all good.

There were some great performances tonight, and even some shockers especially when Usher didn't steal J'Sun when Shakira let him go! I thought he gave a stellar performance and he even reminds me of Usher! Ah well! Tomorrow night we get to do it all again as the battle rounds continue. Stay tuned!

The Voice airs Mondays at 8pm, EST on NBC.
