The 22nd season of The Amazing Race kicks off tonight at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. Phil welcomes the 11 teams and reveals there will be two Express Passes up for grabs at the end of this leg. At his "go", the teams are off to LAX with Bora Bora as their first destination. The first flight holds Chuck and Wynona, Pam and Winnie, Idries and Jamil, Dave and Connor, and Jessica and John. Max and Katie, Monica and Beth, Anthony and Bates, Caroline and Jen, Joey and Meghan, and Matthew and Daniel will be battling it out once the second plane lands.

In Bora Bora, a Road Block asks one team member to skydive out of a helicopter, while the other takes a water taxi to the landing zone. I don't care how awesome that view is from the sky, I'd be all about that water taxi! John and Jessica finish first, followed by Idries and Jamil, and teams are headed to Eden Beach next for another Road Block. This time, one team member must search 400 sandcastles in over 100 degree heat for a clue. It doesn't sound so bad until the part where you have to rebuild every castle you knock down.

Jessica finds her clue first, and she and John head down the beat to assemble a canoe to paddle a mile to the pit stop, located at Motu Cafe. The trouble with the boat, though, is that if you lean just a little, you're going over into the water. Anthony and Bates, who arrived at the castles after many others, found their clue quickly and took off. This one's definitely going to come down to some luck!

Teams finish in the following order:

1. Jessica and John

2. Bates and Anthony

3. David and Connor

4. Pam and Winnie

5. Mona and Beth

6. Joey and Meghan

7. Chuck and Wynona

8. Idries and Jamil

9. Max and Katie

10. Caroline and Jennifer

11. Matthew and Daniel

With two Express Passes, Jessica and John are in a powerful position and must give a pass to another team by the end of the 4th leg. Idries and Jamil had formed an alliance on the way to Bora Bora, and the group agreed to a plan to give it to whoever came in second. The problem? Bates and Anthony aren't in the alliance, so it'll be interested to see what Jessica and John decide.

The final three teams chose to take a four hour penalty and abandon the sandcastles, opting for a footrace to the pit stop instead.  I don't know why you'd want to put yourself four hours behind everyone else and of course, that gamble didn't pay off at all for firefighters Matthew and Daniel.
