Top Chef: Seattle - Episode 12 Recap

Sheldon, Josie, and Lizzie of Top Chef Seattle

It's no surprise that the cheftestants are shocked and upset with Kristen's elimination on Top Chef, but Josie seems to be taking it the hardest. Not because she thinks she should've gone home but because everyone else thinks so! Well, if the group feels a certain way...

Sushi master chef Katsuya Uechi is on hand for this week's Quickfire, where the remaining six are asked to impress him with a simple and tasty dish. Considering many of them have hardly (or never) worked with sushi, this oughta be interesting! The least favorites were Lizzie, with chewy tempura, and Josh, who had greasy bacon on his sushi. For someone who talks such a big game, Josh really has yet to prove himself this season. Brooke and Stefan are the standouts but Chef Katsuya names Stefan as the winner and it's his first Quickfire win ever! Throw $5,000 on top of that and I'd say he's feelin' pretty good right now.

For the Elimination challenge, Padma brings in Tom and Chef/Owner of Momofuku Noodle Bar David Chang into the Top Chef Kitchen. Tom's having a dinner party and he's in the mood for some fried chicken. Seems like a simple task but besides trying to make sure it stays crispy, Tom's got some experts in fried chicken as his guests to add a little pressure. There's several different tactics from marinating to brining to secret spice recipes... I'm getting hungry just watching the food being prepared, never mind plated and served!

Vinny Dotolo and Jon Shook (from Animal and Son of A Gun), David Chang, Michelle Bernstein, Emeril, Wolfgang, and Tom are on hand with Padma to taste the dishes. Lizzie's cutlet is deemed delicious but Tom doesn't think it's necessarily fried chicken. Josie's chicken is way too oily for Wolfgang's taste and to make it worse, it wasn't even hot. Sheldon's dish went over way better and Michelle said that it rocked.

Brooke's chicken doesn't have a bone, which Wolfgang has a problem with, and he said it wasn't even worth being on The Apprentice. Ouch! Michelle thinks Josh has wonderful flavor combinations but Tom felt it wasn't crispy enough. Stefan chose to go with cordon bleu, which Josh said wasn't fried chicken, and Emeril says he has the blues over it.

At Judges' Table, Josh, Lizzie, and Sheldon are told they had the favorite dishes of the night. The Top Chef gods must've heard me giving Josh a hard time earlier because he wins his first Elimination challenge of the season, along with a year's worth of Terlato wines.  The other three face elimination for their disappointing dishes, and everyone has an excuse.  Josie blames it on running out of time, Brooke says she was thrown off by the simplicity of the challenge, and Stefan says they don't have fried chicken where he's from.  SO?!  Josie's time in the competition comes to an end, she refuses to hug Stefan goodbye, and still can't believe she's being eliminated.  She felt her chicken was delicious but none of the judges agreed.  Again, if the group feels a certain way...
