Top Chef: Seattle - Episode 10 Recap

In last week's Quickfire on Top Chef, Wolfgang Puck joins Padma and asks everyone to use one of his favorite ingredients - ginger. The possibilities are endless, but the problem is that they're only given 15 minutes to come up with and perfectly execute their dish. Run, chefs, run!

Wolfgang announces that the worst of the day are Sheldon, comparing his food to that of a cheap Chinese restaurant, and Josh, whose dessert lacked flavor. At the other end of the spectrum were Brooke, Stefan, and Lizzie. Brooke's inventive, creative dish was so good that not only did she win the challenge, but Wolfgang said he would put that on his menu.

Accomplished restaurateur (I mean, the guy has 25 James Beard awards!) Danny Meyer is on hand for the Elimination Challenge, and it's time for the best one of the season - Restaurant Wars! This season, though, there's a bit of a twist. Each cheftestant must first come up with a complete concept, as well as a dish that represents it, and present it to the judges at The Bite of Seattle. The two winning concepts will be selected and those chefs will pick teams from there. That should lead to a more cohesive experience overall, instead of five different points of view. Many people immediately look to represent their hometown or family members, which should be a great way to show the passion that they have for food.

Josh served a seared ribeye, that Tom felt was earthy and tasted very good. Lizzie's mustard green canederli was deemed heavy, and Gail said it looked like a slice of American cheese was just placed on top of it. Stefan chose to serve both a thai lobster bisque and mango lollipop and while the soup went over well, minus the fact that Gail wanted more herbs, Danny felt the lollipop didn't hold up to it.

Padma called Sheldon's sour tamarind soup interesting, but Danny clarified that it's in a good way. Yeah, it's always hard to tell how to take the word "interesting". Kristen's onsen egg with camembert was called perfect by Gail, but the same cannot be said for Micah's raw fish and veggies. Tom felt it wasn't a big enough risk and Danny says it doesn't add anything, asking, "Who needs it?" Clearly not them! Brooke's unkosher matzo ball soup went over fairly well, but Tom wanted her to push the concept further, and last was Josie's black bean chorizo which took forever to be served. Danny liked her concept of home, but said that she has to cook it better than he could in his own home then which I'm assuming she did not.

At Judges' Table, Josh, Kristen, and Sheldon are called in as the ones with the best concepts and dishes but Josh ends up being left out in the cold. They must immediately pick teams, without knowing who is going home, and it ends up being the guys vs. the girls. Micah, Josie, and Lizzie face the panel for their subpar dishes but Tom felt that Micah's concept wasn't from the heart and sent him to Last Chance Kitchen, where he lost against the seemingly unstoppable CJ.
