Final 6 and loved ones on Survivor: Philippines

by Gina Scarpa

With nowhere to turn this week on Survivor: Philippines, Abi-Maria continues to keep up the lie that she has the hidden immunity idol. This is the same girl who, just a few weeks back, waved her real idol around at tribal council and now suddenly, won't show it to anyone. I'm not sure anyone believes her but she's sticking to her story. Lisa feels horrible for voting out Penner and much as I want to see her do well, I'm getting sick of the guilt trips she puts herself through. Just play the game, and own your decisions.

The only challenge better than the Survivor auction is when loved ones are flown in to compete for some time with the people they've been separated from for so long. One by one, Skupin's son, Carter's mom, Denise's husband, Lisa's brother, Abi's mom, and Malcolm's brother run in for tearful reunions but Lisa takes the cake. In fact, her brother Justice was so taken aback by her emotional state that he recently told People magazine that he felt she was at rock bottom. Skupin's excitement over seeing his son, and Denise jumping into her husband's arms were tearjerker moments as well.

In the challenge, Survivors throw muddy bags to their loved ones, who must use it to knock down five targets. Everyone does fairly well at it, with the exception of Abi and her mom, but Malcolm and Miles pull off the win. Considering it was also Malcolm's brother's dream to be on Survivor, it's a really nice moment for the two. Of course, he has to make the heart wrenching choice to let two more people bring their loved ones back to camp overnight and I was sure he'd go with Denise. Instead, he chooses Skupin and Lisa, to thank them for being loyal to him during some crucial tribal councils.

At camp, Lisa and Skupin revisit the idea of blindsiding Malcolm, and Lisa is able to talk about her conflicting feelings with her brother. He reminds her that this is a game and you don't have to always stick to your word. This is still about winning a million dollars, and Lisa really needed to hear that in order to get her eye on the prize. On a side note, I love how CBS played it up like Miles was going to trainwreck Malcolm's game but he was perfectly fine! Oh, you clever editing department, you!

In the immunity challenge, players run across a balance beam in the water, use a grappling hook to retrieve bags of puzzle pieces, then construct a long beam back on the beach to hit a target. Never in the history of Survivor has anyone moved slower than Abi did in this challenge. She looked like she was enjoying a day at the beach instead of fighting like hell to stay in the game, and even Probst couldn't keep his comments to himself about it. Carter came close to winning the necklace for a third time since the merge, but Malcolm is able to pull off the win, ruining Lisa's plan to send him to the jury.

Now, the logical thing for Lisa to do would be to take out Denise because if you can't get your number one target, you take out their number two. Instead, it's just between Carter and Abi. He points out that he's been a worthy competitor and Abi has been tons of drama, while she keeps playing the fake idol card. At tribal, Lisa admits that she wishes she were more noble but wants to keep someone around that she knows she can beat. Denise echoes a similar sentiment, saying that Abi doesn't have a shot at winning, and thus, Carter is voted out of the game.
