Pete Yurkowski of Survivor: Philippines

by Gina Scarpa

It seemed that, from the beginning, Pete didn't mind being labeled as a villain in the game of Survivor. He secretly drove a wedge between RC and Abi-Maria and schemed to vote Michael out, a member of his own alliance. Post-merge, there was no breaking his allegiance to fellow "bad guys" Artis and Abi-Maria so the remaining players targeted the trio and started sending them to the jury. We talked to Pete following his elimination last week about his strengths in the game, his feelings about RC, and his thoughts on Malcolm still being in the game.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was it about you that you felt was right for Survivor?
A. Pete: I really love games, I love playing video games and all that kinda stuff. I just graduated college, my mom said to get a job, and I saw Survivor. I'm very good at flirting with girls... what else? I'm an engineer, I'm pretty intelligent, I like strategic games, and this is just a crazy adventure of a lifetime.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You were causing some chaos at the Tandang camp early in the game between RC and Abi-Maria. Did they know it was you who planted the clue?
A. Pete: Nobody ever knew that that was me until the end. Nobody needed to know, there was no reason. I think I might have told Artis one night. It was a good campfire story. They were already drifting apart, they were obviously not going to get along. They just needed a little catalyst.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You, Abi, and Artis are being labeled as the bad guys this season. What's your take on that?
A. Pete: Artis kinda got ripped into it. He was just in an alliance with us, and he had a solid spot. I don't care if I'm labeled as a villain. Some of the stuff I did, I didn't need to do but at the time, it made sense. RC got a good edit, go look at her Ponderosa videos.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Abi got an earful at tribal council last week. Were you feeling bad for her or were you seeing where the others were coming from?
A. Pete: It's never good to see a girl cry but some of the stuff was well deserved. She was acting kinda crazy and saying stuff she didn't need to say. Was it well deserved? Yes and no.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Was there discussion about you having the idol at tribal council?
A. Pete: On that one where we voted out RC, I didn't feel all that comfortable because I knew there was a chance I might go home. I had the idol in my pocket. It was so obvious they were gunning for me and Abi so she kept it for herself. People were thinking she wouldn't give me the idol but I had had it.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: As a jury member, what kind of player earns your respect?
A. Pete: Someone who plays the game, someone who's not just playing nicey nice. Not someone who's going to ride alliances and make one big move.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Who is left in the game right now that's underrated, in your opinion?
A. Pete: I don't think anyone because everybody right now is making moves right now. You don't really know who's at the top of the alliance, you really can't tell. Lisa is making more moves than I really thought she was.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It's a little surprising that Malcolm wasn't targeted until later in the game. In a way, I understand because he was helpful to Tandang once he first arrived but he is a physical threat and he has an idol!
A. Pete: Yeah, the kid has an idol to last him through one more tribal council. He seems like he's in a top spot, which doesn't make any sense. People usually target people with idols. It was fun playing the game with him. I'm only one person and it's good to have someone else's input. To actually be able to talk to someone else about my strategy, and someone my age, was good.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What are you going to do next? Did Survivor make you want to travel more?

A. Pete: Oh I definitely wanna do more traveling. It's cool seeing different parts of the world. I'm still trying to figure some stuff out, maybe move to Silicon Valley... I don't know.
