The Bachelorette Season 8

by Gina Scarpa

Prior to this week of The Bachelorette, I had never seen much (or any) of the country of Croatia and now, I see what I've been missing! The city of Dubrovnik is absolutely breathtaking and definitely sets the stage for romance. Chris Harrison must've been busy because it's Emily who shows up to deliver the first date card to Travis. Finally, the egg man gets his shot.

The two take a little walk through Dubrovnik, sharing ice cream and walking arm in arm. As they head into dinner, Travis is realizing that he's really falling for Emily and hasn't felt this strongly since his engagement ended a few years back. Sure, Emily is nice and perhaps a little flirty at times but there is absolutely no chemistry between them at all. If he paid attention to the way she relates to people like Arie or Ryan, he'd realize that he was way behind the eight ball in terms of his relationship with her. Therefore, it's a surprise only to him when he doesn't receive the rose and is sent packing. He's even brought to tears! Was he really that delusional?

On the group date, the guys get to see Disney/Pixar's Brave before anyone else and I can't help but feel a little jealous. I'm literally counting down the days until it comes out and appreciate the glimpses of the movie I got courtesy of The Bachelorette. Afterwards, they compete in their own version of the Highland Games (featured in the movie) and Chris is convinced he's got this in the bag. Yeah... it didn't go exactly as it planned. From archery to log tossing to a weird wrestling match, Chris sucked at all of them and perhaps embarrassed himself a little. Despite the fact the Sean won two of the events, Emily takes pity of Chris and bestows upon him the Brave cup - which means absolutely nothing but he's pretty pumped about it.

At the after party, Arie steals Emily away for a walk and a little makeout session in the streets. Jef melts her heart with one of the greatest lines ever spoken by a contestant: "You give me the type of feeling that people write novels about." It's Chris, though, that gets the rose. Man, Emily is really taken with him!

Ryan gets the final one on one date of the week and the two go oyster fishing and then have dinner together. The dude is so overconfident that he reads her a list of the twelve things that he wants in a woman. Add that to his constant trophy wife comments and Emily's had enough. She sends him packing (FINALLY!) and he is completely dumbfounded. The best part of his exit was when he asked the crew on the ride home to edit him accurately. Oh, I'm pretty sure they did, buddy.

At the cocktail party, Doug still can't get up the nerve to kiss Emily, let alone be affectionate with her. He knows he's behind the other guys but he's not doing anything about it either. Do people really call him Humble Doug? I can never tell if he's one hundred percent genuine or not. John (yes, he's still here) finally gets his chance to open up and shows Emily his grandparents' funeral cards that he carries in his wallet that nobody knows about. He even is brought to tears about it, which Emily finds very sweet. I personally find it kind of odd that the guy has said almost nothing all season to her and then chooses a very emotional story for his first "moment" with her. I don't count the two on one date with Nate cause that was just all kinds of awkward.

When it came time to hand out roses, Emily confidently handed them to Sean, Jef, and Arie but when it came time to the final rose, she just turned around and walked out. After finding Chris Harrison outside (who asked "What are you doing?!"), she decides to change the rules, walks back into the ceremony, and hands roses to both Doug and John.

Yeah, yeah. Let's just get to next week! I can't WAIT to see what happens when Emily realizes Arie dates one of the producers, aka one of Emily's close friends.

The Bachelorette airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
