The Bachelorette Season 8

by Gina Scarpa

This week on The Bachelorette, the guys are finally getting out of Emily's hometown of Charlotte, NC and embark on their worldwide tour of love. First stop? Rosewood Tucker's Point Resort in Bermuda and it's absolutely beautiful. There's not much time to take in the sights though, as the first one on one date card arrives for Doug. The single father is happy to finally get some time with Emily, but he's also pretty nervous and insecure, which Arie can't help but jump all over. It almost seems like it's going to come to blows when Emily walks in and saves the day!

The pair head to a small town to do some shopping together, then decide to write Doug's son a postcard since he wrote her a letter on the first night. She tries to dig down and figure out where his flaws are but he can't seem to admit any. Over dinner, it's more of the same and he says things like, "I spend too much time with my son" and "My ex-girlfriend said I didn't wash her car enough". Really dude? Emily worries that he reminds her of Brad and oddly enough, I see it too. I think they're both way too worried about seeming perfect all the time. Still, he gets the rose but decides not to kiss Emily. He never makes the first move, EVER, okay people? If Emily wants a kiss from Doug, she'll need to ask Doug for a kiss. He actually said something to that effect... in the third person and everything.

Who are the lucky fellows to attend this week's group date? Why, it's Charlie, Ryan, Chris, Jef, Sean, Arie, Travis, and Kalon. As if group dates aren't bad enough, this one involves a boat race where the losing team has to go home immediately and will spend no time with Emily. The yellow team (Arie, Jef, Ryan, and Kalon) comes from behind to pull off the win, while Charlie cries in the van as the others head back to the hotel.

At the little party afterwards, Ryan jokingly(?) refers to Emily as a trophy wife, then lectures her about her responsibility as The Bachelorette, and criticizes her for kissing Arie in front of other guys. If you thought this guy was batting a thousand, just wait until the cocktail party before the rose ceremony. Jef continues to play it cool, telling Emily he likes her, but doesn't make a move. She eats it up and gives him the rose for the date.

This week's Awkward Award goes to the two on one date between Nate, John, and Emily. It's probably awkward because you guys keep talking about how awkward it is. After a boat ride and some cliff dives, the three share dinner in a cave where John refers to quinoa as "quin-oh-ah" and cries about how much he loves his family. Johny takes a more laid back approach, seeming confident in who he is, and proclaims to be just a regular guy. Emily takes the lesser of two evils, sticking with John, and sending Nate home to be reunited with his loved ones.

At the cocktail party, Alejandra promises to open up to Emily if he's given the chance, Arie steals Emily away from Ryan, who then (here's what I'm talking about) brags to Michael that he hopes to be the next Bachelor if things don't work out with Emily. Chris and Doug get into a possible alcohol-induced argument over whether or not age matters. As Emily later points out to Chris Harrison, every time an argument pops up, Doug is involved. And she promises Ryan isn't pulling the wool over her eyes - she gets what he's up to. Doe she?

Roses are handed out to Sean, Arie, Travis, Chris, Ryan, Kalon, and Alejandro. So Ryan gets one step closer to being the Bachelor, Alejandro may get his chance, and Chris survives the stigma of being just 25 years old (even though Emily is 26). We say goodbye to Cryin' Charlie and Silent Mike. Better luck next time, fellas!
