Chaz Brown from Around The World In 80 Plates

After a few controversial weeks, Chef Chaz Brown was the next contestant eliminated from Around the World in 80 Plates. Strategy continues to grow as the game moves forward, and it appears that a good strategy may be more important than good skills going forward. We talked to Chaz today in an exclusive interview about his thoughts on the other chefs, how he came across on television, and his favorite place that he traveled.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you want to audition for Around The World In 80 Plates?
A. Chaz: I had done Top Chef before and done Chefs Vs. City for another network. I was approached about this and the idea of it was pretty much any chef's dream. If you don't want to do that... it was an awesome experience.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When you saw the other chefs competing this season, what was your opinion of them and how did you feel you stacked up against them?
A. Chaz: When I saw the other chefs and as I got to know them, everyone is talented. They're there for a reason. They're not actors, they're not people that don't do this for a living. They're all dedicated and seasoned chefs. When you're there, you just say, "Everyone's here for the same reason and now it's cook."

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Your passion for cooking can come across negatively aggressive - do you think your style was portrayed accurately?
A. Chaz: Listen, at the end of the day, I'm a passionate dude. Sometimes, I do get a little angry. I come from a pretty competitive household. I'm not worried about if I came off too competitive. For the most part, what you see is what you get. Certain people took it the wrong way and that's fine with me.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: One of your criticisms of Avery was that she took credit for others' work, yet you, yourself, won Most Valuable Chef in the first episode based on the bread pudding that Keven made. You even mentioned it in the next episode, so what, in your view, made the situations different?
A. Chaz: Well, it's one of those things where, in conversation, I wanted to have a balanced meal. Keven pretty much came up with a bread pudding and I thought it was great but I don't necessarily think it was his idea, the way it came out. It's a competition. You either go for it or you don't go for it. There was a lot of cooking done that day. I will say that day, I did a lot of cooking. It wasn't just bread pudding. That day, whether it was over dessert, everybody in that room knew I was going to get Most Valuable Chef.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Of the cities you competed in, which was your favorite?
A. Chaz: Honestly, the best time I had was Marrakesh. I had the chance to go to Africa and it's not something a lot of African-American people get to do. To set foot on the continent was a dream come true. The food was great, the people were even nicer... it doesn't take away from the fact that you want to win $150,000. I saw things, tasted things, heard things that I normally wouldn't get to do. It was amazing.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How has being on the show influenced your cooking?
A. Chaz: You know what? It definitely has influenced by cooking. You can have an interpretation of something and to see things at the source or core of it... I don't wanna use the word archaic bu some of these cooking techniques are very old. We have a lot of gadgets and starches to make our sauces perfect bu to see people do it the organic way makes you think to yourself, "I can do this the easy way bu there is a certain taste that you just can't get." I want people to experience those things.
