The Amazing Race 20 Winners Dave and Rachel Brown

by Gina Scarpa

Dave and Rachel Brown were clearly in it to win it this season on The Amazing Race. They may have argued along the way, but they pulled it together every time it mattered. Despite accidentally skipping a Road Block in the final leg, they were able to go back, complete it, and still check in first. Not only did they win the million dollars, but they made history as the first team to ever win eight legs in a single season of The Amazing Race! We talked to married couple today about their partnership, the stress of the finale, and how the race brought them closer together.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: We know that part of the reason the two of you decided to do The Amazing Race was so that you would be able to spend a lot of time together but whose idea was it to actually try out?
A. Dave: It was actually Rachel's, initially. We're both fans of the show and she came across the application when I was in Iraq. We met up when I was in Australia and we printed the application out, had some wine, and filled out the applications.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: One thing I love about you, Rachel, is how strong you were this season and you were so important to the success of your team in that final leg. Dave, tell us a little more about how you felt about Rachel's performance this season?
A. Dave: Honestly, I've known Rachel long enough to realize how successful she is. Rachel is very professional in her own right and she's been very successful in all aspects of her life. I have the utmost respect for her and I don't think the edit translated well for me as a spouse. I'm actually very supportive of her. At times, I'll maybe magnify the negatives. But I thought Rachel did absolutely phenomenal, not just last night, not just Bollywood, not just the hay stack, but throughout the race.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: And Dave, that military background may have driven your wife crazy sometimes but it definitely came in handy throughout the race. Rachel, looking back on it, how do you feel that Dave's experience in the military helped push you guys forward this season?
A. Rachel: Dave is definitely somebody who pushes himself and others around him. If I was with another family member, it wouldn't have gone as well.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I still can't get over the fact that you had to go back to complete the Road Block in the final leg and STILL checked in first! How freaked out were you the first time you reached the mat?
A. Rachel: Oh my gosh, it was the worst feeling ever. We were in completely shock. We didn't realize what happened. At first, we thought it was the ice challenge. He thought we messed up there. We were like, "We're a helicopter ride away! How can we do this?" Then we realized we must've missed one. It was so hard to paddleboard back but it was a great workout!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did you view Art and JJ as your biggest competition this season? And speaking of them, has the whole U-Turn argument blown over between you guys?
A. Dave: Yeah actually, Art and JJ... in one of our final interviews in L.A. to get on the show, Art and JJ were with us at that point. From the first minute I saw them, they were very intense and very focused. They were there for one reason and that was to win.
A. Rachel: And yeah, we're on good terms! After everything wrapped, all the teams were able to get together and we all made up!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Besides winning this season, you're also the winningest time in the show's history. After 20 seasons, that's pretty huge. What can future teams learn from you and the way you ran this race?
A. Dave: I think some of the most important aspects would be attention to detail and being receptive to your partner's advice or suggestions, but also having to be decisive at some point.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: The race seemed to really strengthen your relationship. What did it mean to have that time together?
A. Rachel: I think that the race definitely strengthened our relationship! We might get heated but we always get back to being levelheaded and loving each other and remembering what's important. The time together was great! We had been apart so much so having a month together was awesome. When we would get to the hotel rooms, we got to talk a lot at night and that was great.
