Naia Kete from The Voice Season 2

by Gina Scarpa

Naia Kete made an impression with people on the streets of L.A. when she performed out in public, and the same was true was she sang for the judges on The Voice. Her rendition of "The Lazy Song" made two turn their chairs, and she ultimately went with Blake Shelton as her coach. She easily defeated country singer Jordan Rager in the battle round and now prepares for the live shows. We caught up with Naia today to find out what brought her to The Voice and her journey so far.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Did you watch the first season of The Voice?
A. Naia: I did. I watched part of season 1 as it aired and when I knew I was going to try out, I obsessively watched all of it. I had just moved out to L.A. and my manager suggested it. I thought, "Gosh, why not?" When I would play on the street in Santa Monica, people would come up and say, "When are you making a record and when are you going on the road?"

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you choose The Voice over other reality competitions?
A. Naia: Gosh, I was so attracted to The Voice because I just had the gut feeling that they are paying attention to who you are as an artist. It's truly about your voice and the uniqueness of it. I feel like other shows, whoever sings the biggest and the loudest and the most on pitch gest it. Of course you have to be on pitch on The Voice but you can play with it more. The subtleties are more appreciated and I think it's because all the coaches are artists in their own right. I love the whole spin of the blind auditions.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Getting Jason Mraz for the battle round definitely catered more to your style than Jordan's. Were you feeling confident going in?
A. Naia: Well, you know, it's interesting. I did feel confident in the song but because, again, my experience is that I sing a lot of covers to get people's attention. I try and sing covers that are not necessarily in my vane so I can put my own spin on them. So immediately, that's what I thought of. I thought, "Jordan could kill this and do something cool." Blake said he's country as dirt so he could totally own it and shock everybody and the other thing is that I felt a lot of pressure because I felt like people were going to be expecting a lot of me. All of those feelings... not to mention, I totally love Jordan... I was getting in my head a lot in the battle round, more so than I did in the blind audition. I was really getting down on myself more than I should have.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What are you most looking forward to with the live shows?
A. Naia: I think what I'm most looking forward to is the song that we chose is going to be showing a very, very different side of myself. I'm really excited to just expand everyone's view of who I am. I think it should be a lot of fun.
