Dancing With the Stars Season 14

by Kylene Hamulak

As we join our dancers for week 2 of Dancing With The Stars (also known as week 1 part 2, since this week's scores will combine with last week's towards the first elimination) let's recap last week's standings, shall we?

26 points - Katherine/Mark, Urkel/Kym
24 points - William/Cheryl
23 points - Jack/Anna, Roshon/Chelsie, Sherri/Val, Gladys/Tristan
21 points - Maria/Derek, Donald/Peta
20 points - Gavin/Karina, Melissa/Max, Martina/Tony

Now that we've been reminded who cha-cha'd or trotted better than others, let's get started with this week's fancy footwork.

Team: Roshon and Chelsie
Dance: Quick Step
Tonight's (non-alcoholic, of course) drinking game was going to include shots for every mention of the word "swag", but all the punch was gone before I got through the first intro package. They rolled out the red carpet (literally) for Roshon and Chelsie, and their quick step did not disappoint. Judges said:
9 - Len LIKED it and described it as young and fresh. He thoroughly enjoyed it.
8 - Bruno tells Roshon he has more sparks than a bolt of lightning. He also noted that Roshon has cheeky swagger, and, to quote Bruno, "that grin that I find absolutely delicious!"
9 - Carrie Ann noted he was able to turn last week's swagger into sophistication and elegance for an amazing performance.
Score = 26

Team: Sherri and Val
Dance: Jive
Despite her technical skill (or lack thereof), I enjoy Sherri. She tells us in her intro that her "equipment is way too heavy for all that bouncing around", and you just know it's going to be interesting to watch Val try to work with it. But they make it work. Sort of. I mean, her footwork didn't look great, but watching her bounce around, I didn't really care. I mean, she flat out screwed up an entire sequence, but she just kept shaking that gold fringe like that's what was supposed to happen. Judges said:
8 - Bruno exclaimed, "You know how to work that magnificent equipment!" He saw the missteps too, but said, "I don't care, I loved it!"
8 - Carrie Ann told Sherri she loved her and then almost cost the ABC censors some money - "FUHHH-REAKING phenomenal." She noticed the mistake in the routine, but thought it was a good cover and great energy.
7 - Len's review began, "You felt good, the audience felt good, I felt good!" Well, if Len feels good, we all feel good!

(Note: I'd like the judges to remember that we only need one person in this recap giving brownie points for fun dances even when the technique sucks, and I called dibs on that.)
Score = 23

Team: Melissa and Maks
Dance: Quick Step
In this week's edition of Fun Facts About Melissa's Personal Life, we learn that she dated Billy Idol and that dancing is more difficult than childbirth. We also learn that she cries when Maks says something nice, but her crying doesn't have quite the effect on me that the Kristen Bell sloth video did. The routine isn't bad, and I do love when they use the stairs in the quick step. However, just at the point when I thought "Good for her, I'd totally face plant if I tried that"...well, she slipped. Judges said:
7 - Carrie Ann noticed the slip, but she thought Melissa did a good job recovering and loosened up for the rest of the dance.
6 - Len thought the routine started well and liked the transition (GAH, Len, stop stealing my ideas!), but he thought it was a tad hectic and a little bit loose.
7 - Bruno agreed that when Melissa tightens up, it stops the natural movement, but he thought she did well with a difficult dance and gave an overall good performance
Score = 20

Team: Jack and Anna
Dance: Jive
I'm not sure what to make of Jack. The harder he tries to be the "cool guy", the closer he gets to being a creepy guy. Honestly, I thought the dance looked good, but what do I know. I get distracted by fast moving fringe. Judges said:
- Len liked the content, attitude, and energy but thought he lost a little control. He believed that the two dances Jack has performed should be enough to take him to next week.
7 - Bruno commended Jack for giving his all, and thinks it was an overall great performance but not precise enough for jive.
7 - Carrie Ann thinks Jack is a great dancer, but that he over danced it, which threw them off. She loves what they're doing, but warned them to be careful about being ahead of the beat.
Score=21

Team: Gladys and Tristan
Dance: Quick Step
I know this recap is supposed to be about Gladys, but, I mean, Tristan was in tails. With a really lovely royal blue lining. Maybe that's why Gladys dances with such joy. What I loved most about their performance (besides Tristan looking dapper) was the giant "BIG" piano projected on the dance floor that lit up with each step. Judges said:
7 - Bruno told her that he loves her natural feel for music and her connection with Tristan, but warned her to be careful about frame.
7 - Carrie Ann also noted that Gladys is extremely light on her feet, but that her frame was a little casual for quick step. (She thinks maybe it was due to too much gazing into Tristan's eyes, and to that I say....what's your point?)
5 - Len congratulated her for getting through dance, but then listed all the techniques that didn't really work, and told her he "didn't 100% appreciate the dance".

(Note: So NOW you're going to start judging on "technique"?)
Score = 19

Team: Katherine and Mark
Dance: Jive
The whole intro is all about the "raunchy dance" that Mark has created and how shy Katherine is about shaking her "naughty bits". I'm not buying her shy routine. I'm also not buying the awkward Welsh accent Mark tried to pull. The routine looked amazing though - she certainly shook away the shyness (along with all her naughty bits). Judges said:
9 - Carrie Ann was all hot and bothered and described it as "brilliance in the ballroom."
8 - Len really liked the start and end but thought the middle was a little wacky; overall, though, he liked it.
9 - Bruno exclaimed: "THE BLONDE BOMBSHELL IS RELEASED!"
Score=26

Team: Urkel/Jaleel and Kym
Dance: Jive
Urkel made reference to "Krazy-Eye" Kym that made me laugh because I love Kym, but doesn't she seem like the crazy eye type? Their routine wasn't quite as good as it was last week, but it was fun. I also think the standard is a little higher for them because you just KNOW they're going to kill it at some point soon (as long as they stick around long enough to do it). Judges said:
7 - Len thought the routine lacked attack and speed; he said there were moments he enjoyed, but he was a little disappointed.
- Bruno appreciates the thought put into routine. He really enjoyed it but warned them to be sharper on a jive if they get to do it again.
- Carrie Ann noted that it's hard to keep up to last week's expectation; she thought the energy was there, but lacking a little sparkle.
Score=22

Team: Maria and Derek
Dance: Quick Step
In case you missed it last week, Maria's laugh shows up again in the first three seconds of their intro. We also find out she's dancing with a bruised rib that HOPEFULLY won't restrict her dancing. Fingers crossed. It looked pretty good to me, and the Bonnie & Clyde theme was kind of cute.
9 - Before Bruno even starts talking, Maria is leaning over the desk to kiss him. So apparently her rib doesn't hurt so bad that she can't lean over a desk. Anyway, he said the routine was nearly spotless and complimented her frame.
8 - Carrie Ann notes that that is what we're looking for in frame and hold, but she notes they out of sync in middle section for a good chunk. Says it was a huge improvement for them.
8 - Len didn't think the little incident was a big deal, and also thought it was an improvement.
Score=25

Team: Martina and Tony
Dance: Jive
First Maria's rib, now Martina's toe - the injuries are already beginning. Martina continues to work hard, but her dance is kind of uncomfortable for me. First, I can't figure out why she's wearing a net. Did someone try to tie her up and spare her from going out there? There's some weird flirting(?) with the judges, and the best I can say is that she's trying. Because she really is. Judges said:
6 - Carrie Ann tried to say something nice, but all I heard was "sad". She loved the approach and attitude, and added "Nice to see you out here." (So I guess she ran out of brownie points for tonight.)
5 - Len thought it was too neat, too precise and too careful. He urged her to come out and attack dances.
6 - Bruno summed it up: "That serve went into the net."
Score=17

Team: Donald and Peta
Dance: Quick Step
Donald informs us that his nickname used to be "Quickie". I'm not sure that's something you want to advertise. I really liked their routine. If there was a Lavon-Lemon dream sequence in which Hart of Dixie crossed over to DWTS, this is what it would look like. It's Southern elegance in the ballroom. Judges said:
8 - Len thought it was up there with the best of the night and (in bigger news) apologized for under marking him last week.
8 - Bruno described it as refined and elegant. "You've taken our comments...you came back and you proved us wrong."
8 - Carrie Ann thought years of watching DWTS paid off; "Excellent."
Score=24

Team: Gavin and Karina
Dance: Jive
Gavin tells us he wants to quit the jive cold turkey. Karina is not amused. The routine is pretty good, though Gavin sorta goes rogue with some of the steps, but he's so entertained by his own performance, I'll go along with it. Judges said:
7 - Bruno: "Leather does wonders for you - and for me." Uh, say what now? Bruno (and Gavin) notes the many kicks and flicks that were missed, but even so..."the performance is always enjoyable to watch."
7 - Carrie Ann commended him for pushing boundaries and delivering an animated and lively performance.
7 - Len also liked the energy and attitude and noted that it was an improvement on last week.
Score=21

Team: William and Cheryl
Dance: Quick Step
William has never heard of the quick step, so Cheryl gives him some "torture" device to help with his form that he is to wear at all times. Tying his shoes, doing push-ups, showering...we see clips of him doing two of the three. And let me just say, it wasn't the correct two. Performance looks great - of course - and the crowd LOVES it.  Judges say:
9 - Carrie Ann called him the Harry Connick, Jr of the ballroom, commending his technique, posture, and form.
- Len criticized his footwork and thought it lacked body contact; "Good, not great." (That went over well with the crowd.)
- Bruno: "Even fully clothed you have the ability to dazzle." He compared "that sparkle" to The Artist Jean Dujardin. (Dazzle, sparkle...he does realize William is not a vampire, right?)
Score=25

So the first round of competition is OFFICIALLY complete. The scores came down a little from last week, but it's still a strong cast of Stars. Hard to bet on the bottom teams for tomorrow night, but unless she's got a contingent of feverish tennis fans, I'm thinking Martina might be in some trouble.

Find out which couple will be the first to be eliminated this season on Dancing With The Stars tomorrow night, Tuesday at 9/8c on ABC.
