The Voice Season 2: Battle Rounds

by Todd Betzold

The coaches have filled their teams and now it is time for the artists to battle it out to see who will make it onto the live shows on The Voice...the pressure is intense for both the artists and the coaches, as they have to choose who to send home.

The mentors this season will be for Team Adam: Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke, for Team Blake: Kelly Clarkson and his wife, Miranda Lambert, for Team Cee Lo: Babyface and Ne-Yo and for Team Christina: Jewel and Lionel Richie.

Team Adam: Tony Lucca vs. Chris Cauley - "Beautiful Day" by U2
I hate the battles because I hate seeing someone go home...this one is going to be tough. Adam brings in Alanis to help Tony with some training...told him not to strain so much and push himself. For Chris, Adam brings in Robin to help him out...they tell him to go out and perform and feel the emotion of the song. Time for the battle: I feel the song was more tailored for Chris and he did very well, but I enjoy Tony more and he held his own. Christina said Chris had a really dynamic performance, but has to go with Tony because of the Mouseketeer connection. Blake would go with Chris and Cee Lo wants the whole package, so he would go with Tony. Adam makes the final decision and he loves the both, but he has to go with Tony...the first one moving on to the live shows.

Team Blake: Adley Stump vs. RaeLynn - "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty
They rehearse some with Blake and RaeLynn struggles with the arrangement of the song as Adley shines. Blake brings in Miranda to work with RaeLynn, which is a dream come true for her. They tell her to focus on RaeLynn and be herself on stage and not focus on Adley. Blake brings in Kelly to work with Adley and was very starstruck. Adley has a powerful voice and they told her to dial it down some and harmonize with RaeLynn. On the way to the battles, RaeLynn gets a call from Miranda for some last words of encouragement...very cool of her. Time for the battle: I think Adley kind of outshined RaeLynn, as she seemed more confident on that stage. The coaches seem to think the same, as they see RaeLynn being more immature than Adley, even though Adley has only been singing for ten months. Blake wants a country singer to tell a story and he felt RaeLynn did that better, so she will join Team Blake in the live shows.

Team Christina: Chris Mann vs. Monique Benabou - "The Power Of Love" by Celine Dion
Monique is worried because Chris is classically trained and she doesn't have that training. They rehearse with Christina and Monique surprises Christina with a huge note, but Chris looks amazing. The next day, Christina brings in Lionel to work with Chris. They tell him to get out of your own head and get in the moment...the audience is going to know that you're feeling it. She then brings in Jewel to work with Monique. They tell her to use that emotion for wanting to do this for her parents and put that into the song because that is her advantage over Chris. He is worried she feels every note while singing and he is more worried about this battle than he was when he initially heard the pairings. Time for the battle: as much as Chris is trained, Monique rocked that out to me. She had passion and I loved her in this song. Cee Lo thinks Chris is one of the best we have, so he would pick Chris. Blake would go with Monique though. Christina enjoyed them both, but she goes with Chris to join Team Christina in the live shows.

Team Cee Lo: Cheesa vs. Angie Johnson - "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" by Bonnie Tyler
Two powerful voices battling it out and in the rehearsal the claws are coming out as Cheesa wants to raise the key some and Angie says a half-key and then says to go another half-key knowing Cheesa was trying to show off. The next day Cheesa meets with Cee Lo and Babyface to practice and they tell her she must hit that high note or she is done. Angie then meets with Cee Lo and Ne-Yo and told her to not hold back...she'll hold her finger on the trigger until she's ready to shoot...watch out girl! Time for the battle: that was an amazing battle. Both of them were real good...both powerful. Cheesa held her own, but I feel Angie is has a better tone to her voice. Blake like them both, but would go with Cheesa, but Blake would go with Angie. Cee Lo loved the matchup and felt like a proud father, but he chooses the winner of the battle today was Cheesa and she will join Team Cee Lo in the live shows.

Team Blake: Jordis Unga vs. Brian Fuente - "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette
Battle of the rockers, as they meet with Blake to do some rehearsals. They both seem to be struggling with this song and getting the arrangement. The next day, Brian meets with Blake and Kelly to go over the song. They tell him to not hold back and step up to the plate and commit to the song. Then Jordis meets with Blake and Miranda, as Blake says she has so much talent and the only thing that is going to get to her is her head. Time for the battle: it was a good song, but I think Jordis outshined Brian during this performance. Cee Lo thought Brian was more aggressive onstage and he would go with Brian, but Adam and Christina would go with Jordis. Blake thought they were both not the greatest they could be, but the emotional breakdown Jordis showed onstage he liked, so he picks Jordis to move on to the live shows for Team Blake.

Team Christina: Anthony Evans vs. Jesse Campbell - "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys
They've been promoting this battle all show, so it better be as epic as they claim it will be. Jesse had all four coaches turn around, so he is coming in confident and Anthony is feeling like an underdog, so that will push him even harder. The next day, Christina brings in Lionel to work with Jesse. They tell him to not run past himself...take his time. Anthony works with Jewel and Christina, who tell him to mean what he sings...mean every note that comes out, not just doing it to sound big. Time for the battle: this one is going to bring us all to church I feel. And to church they brought us, this was amazing. I think Anthony did excellent, but I feel Jesse did just as excellent but he made the song his own and Anthony hit the huge notes. I would go with Jesse, as would Adam and Blake. However, Christina has the final say and she goes with Jesse to join Team Christina in the live shows.
