Top Chef: Texas

by Gina Scarpa

On last night's Top Chef: Texas, the final four met up with Padma and Tom so that they could become a final five once again. Turns out that Beverly defeated not only Nyesha, but Grayson too, and she's back in the game - much to the dismay of the others.

In this week's Quickfire, the cheftestants have 30 minutes to cook a dish but must wear a blindfold while choosing the ingredients. The winner gets a choice for their prize: a brand new Prius or a guaranteed spot in the final group. The latter sounds like the more ideal choice, but it means they can't compete in the next Elimination Challenge, which leads to the feeling that they may not have "earned their spot".

Once Tom and Padma have tasted the dishes (which are either seafood dishes or soup - hey, we're under a time crunch here!), they call out Paul and Beverly for their undercooked food. The winning dish belongs to Sarah, who made the bold move of combining mushrooms and peaches in her soup, and takes the guaranteed spot.

Padma and Tom welcome the chefs' mentors into the kitchen and bring up some tears. Okay, a lot of tears. Standing before them are Michelle Bernstein, Tony Mantuano, Sarah Stegner, Tyson Cole, and Frank Crispo. For their Elimination Challenge, the cheftestants will have to make a dish that impresses their mentor. The winner of this gets the Prius, and as for Sarah, well... she just gets to hang out with Tony for the rest of the episode.

Beverly serves her dish first, gull shrimp and barbecue pork with noodles. Sarah says the shrimp is cooked perfectly, of course, but Tom does back her up and says that she did very well cooking in the wok for so many people. Lindsay goes next and serves a seafood stew over couscous that makes people question why she used cream the way she did but Hugh says she did a good job, all things considered. Not the best feedback of the night, that's for sure.

Up next is Paul, who serves a chilled sunchoke and dashi soup with summer vegetables. Michelle originally thought it was salty, but Hugh finished her thought, saying that the vegetables balanced it all out. Last to serve is Ed, who puts pork belly with smoked oyster crema in front of the judges and mentors. Gail loves that he packed the plate with flavor and Frank describes him as an "in your face chef", in a good way.

At Judges' Table, Paul is announced as the winner and not only does he win the car, he's heading to the final four. Beverly is told she'd safe and I'm pretty sure you could hear the sound of jaws hitting the floor around her. After a "you should be so proud of yourselves" speech from Hugh and speeches from the bottom two about their passion for cooking and Top Chef, Padma shockingly eliminates Ed.   The judges just couldn't forgive that he used canned oysters in his dish instead of fresh.  Did anyone else have money on him facing off with Paul in the finale?!
