The Biggest Loser 13: Episode 1 Recap

The Biggest Loser 13

by Gina Scarpa

After thirteen seasons of The Biggest Loser, we've heard every reason in the book for why people have gotten overweight: they don't have enough time, being overweight runs in their family, they're always taking care of everyone else, they're a food addicts, they suffered an injury, and so on and so on... tonight, the excuses stop. Before they can find out the total meaning of that, the contestants have to compete in their first challenge, where the last team won't even get to step foot on the ranch.

The first round of the challenge is a 40 yard dash, and blue, orange, brown, and yellow finish first which means they're automatically in. Mark, from the gray team, falls and becomes the first one of the season to be examined by the medical staff. Hi, Dr. H!! The second round has contestants running and back and forth to retrieve puzzle pieces and assemble it. Gray, red, purple, and green finish first and make it onto the ranch as well.

That leaves pink and aqua to stand on barrels and hold onto each other until they can't anymore. Daphne, from aqua, ends up stepping out of bounds and she and her brother Adrian are sent home. The Biggest Loser is brutal sometimes but one month from today, they'll be brought back to weigh in and if they can lose 50 pounds as a team, they'll get back in the game.

The next day, Bob and Dolvett arrive via motorcycle and helicopter respectively - it's tough to say who had the cooler entrance. Oh wait, Dolvett did. He rappelled from a HELICOPTER. After two hours of working out with them in the Planet Fitness Gym (cue commercial for Planet Fitness) they'll get to pick trainers. And by working out, I mean sweating, screaming in agony, fake puking, real puking, and rolling around on the ground.

As if it's not bad that most of these people are at their breaking points, Alison interrupts the workout to drop the bomb that there will be no partners this season. Once they get over the initial shock (and honestly, most of them take it better than I thought they would), they choose which trainer they want to work with.

Bob's black team: Jeremy, Emily, Joe, Christine, Cassandra, Buddy, Megan, Chism, Gail

Dolvett's red team: Conda, Kim N, Mike, Roy, Nancy, Ben, Kim S, Mark, Lauren

Once teams are chosen, it's time for a sobering visit to Dr. H where the contestants get to find out just how close they are to disease or worse, death. Anybody else feel a little extra motivation in the room during their last chance workout?

Here are the numbers from tonight's weigh-in:

Black Team
Gail: -9
Chism: -12
Megan: -7
Christine: -8
Jeremy: -13
Joe: -15
Ben: -15
Emily: -10
Cassandra: -14
TOTAL: -103 (3.64%)

Red Team
Roy: -14
Conda: -9
Mike: -13
Kimmy S: -9
Lauren: -9
Mark: -9

Nancy: -5

Kim N: -13

Buddy: -22

TOTAL: -103 (3.98%)

Megan has the lowest percentage of weight loss but cries to her team about how miserable she is and as much as I feel bad for her, people need to stop falling on their swords - cue Ben.  How can you be ready to leave when you've been here for five minutes?  Yep, that homesickness will getcha every time.  The black team decides to send him home and while he thinks it's the right decision, I think it's a terrible one.  Who's with me?

Are you shocked that Dolvett's team beat Bob's in week one?  Who are you rooting for?
