Top Chef: Texas

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight, on Top Chef: Texas, the chefs meet up with Padma and guest judge Dean Fearing for a saucier challenge. Saucier sounds like a fun position to have, doesn't it? Maybe I just like saying it. Saucier! Each contestant must prepare a dish using one of the five "mother sauces" (béchamel, espagnole, hollandaise, tomate, or velouté).

Dakota, Nyesha, Beverly had the unfortunate distinction of being Dean's least favorite of the day. Grayson, on the other hand, wins the challenge, after impressing Dean not only with her hollandaise sauce, which Dean felt was cooked to perfection, but with her ravioli as well. I can't help but be happy for him. I'm definitely a Grayson fan this season (but my heart still belongs to Paul)!

Tonight's Elimination Challenge asks the chefs create a four course steak dinner for the Cattle Baron's ball. A little extra incentive? Giving the winner a brand new Toyota Venza.

Sarah, Beverly, and Dakota get to work on their first course, which is Tomato-Watermelon Gazpacho, Poached Shrimp, and Avocado Mousse. Chris J, Edward, and Paul are responsible for the second course, an appetizer: New York Strip Carpaccio, Pistachio Vinaigrette, Mushroom "Bacon", and Red Onion.

Nyesha, Ty-Lor, Whitney, and Chris C. are on the third course, preparing Grilled Rib Eye, Creamy Potato Gratin, Braised Greens, and Thyme Jus. Not only did Ty-Lor slice the webbing of his finger and spend the night in the ER, he has the huge task of grilling 200 steaks, all which have to come out medium rare. Not helping things - his team flashed the steaks WAY too early and they're not warm at all when it's time to serve.

Lindsay, Heather, and Grayson take on the dessert, and Heather decides to make the same cake from the quinceneara episode.... the same cake that is Ed's recipe, not hers. Well, at least, according to him. The finished product is "Right Side Up" Texas Peach Cake, Whipped Mascarpone, and Pecan Streusel. Gimme some of that! Heather may know how to make a cake, but what she doesn't know how to do is get along with her fellow contestants. From bossing people around to throwing people under the bus, she definitely needs to work on her people skills.

Heather ends up being on the winning side of things, along with Nyesha and Chris J, but she is the one who gets the keys to the Toyota. Ty-Lor, Edward, and Whitney are called in to defend their dishes and escape elimination. Whitney hoped that the fact that she worked for judge Hugh Acheson in the past would save her but the panel couldn't get past the undercooked potatoes and sent her off to Last Chance Kitchen.
