Survivor: South Pacific

by Gina Scarpa

With only six players actively in the game of Survivor, and all from the same original tribe, it's inevitable that somebody is going to feel on the outs and that person is Edna. It's not like she's imagining it - Brandon told her straight up at tribal council that she's not part of the tribe. Understandably, she doesn't want to participate in morning prayer or pretend that she's actually friends with these people.

She turns on the waterworks for Coach, trying to figure out why some 19 year old, high school dropout is telling her what to do. She's abruptly cut off by said dropout, who comes barging back into camp with Sprint tree mail - yay! Family visits!

But first, the epic duel between Cochran and Ozzy. Okay, not really. They must first throw out grappling hooks to retrieve three bags, then use the balls inside to guide them through a difficult maze. Cochran has a tough time with the grappling hook; Survivor even provides unnecessary cartoon sound effects for one of his blunders. He almost finishes the maze first but Ozzy comes through and lives to see another day. He must feel so lucky!

Oh wait. For his "prize", he gets to decide which Upolu members get to see their loved ones. Maybe it's better off to be Cochran, heading to Ponderosa! Ozzy grants Albert, Coach, and Brandon time with their family members while Rick, Edna, and Sophie only get a quick hug and glimpse with their people, who flew halfway around the world to see them.

Turns out Brandon's dad is a chip off the old block, bullying Brandon into fighting for the million so he can take care of his family and trying to strongarm Coach into promising to take his son to the final three. Those Hantz boys love to stir up some trouble, don't they?

At the immunity challenge, player turns over squares on a giant game board until they run out of spaces to stand on. Basically, it's a giant game of Q-bert. Brandon rigs his game so that he purposely gets Edna out (what is his problem with her?!) while nobody goes after kingpin Coach and he easily takes the necklace back to camp.

Before tribal, Edna makes a convincing speech about honor and integrity, something Upolu has preached since day one. How does Brandon exemplify those things, she asks them. Psh, they don't care. They're here for a million dollars, not to be a noble warrior. I don't even think Coach cares about being a noble warrior anymore at this point.

When the votes are read, Edna is unanimously voted out of her tribe and heads to Redemption Island, where it seems she offers to tell Ozzy anything and everything he needs to know.
