America's Next Top Model Cycle 17

by Mike Bandy

It's down to the final four girls on ANTM All-Stars! Angelea is still around after her fourth appearance int the bottom two, and she was surprised (and happy) that Dominique got sent home. Oh, and as if you didn't already know, she hates Lisa. The feeling seems to be mutual - Lisa said that Angelea's emotional outbursts are going to continue. I guess we'll find out...

Meanwhile, Laura was happy to have gotten best photo, and over photos of Laura as a kid, we heard about how things like being the runner up for the short cycle and making it to the final 4 on All Stars doesn't happen to people where she's from. Oh no...why is Laura getting the loser edit! She's supposed to be around for the top three like I've always planned! She CAN't be going home this week...can she? Read on...

The girls met up with Nigel for an audition with Franca Sozzani, the editor of Vogue Italia. Their assignment is to write a blog that talks about the fashion and culture of Crete from their perspective, because the winner would write a blog for Vogue Italia. The challenge was to pick an outfit from the boutique, find a location on the island, take modelicious photos, and write a blog - all in three hours. The winner of the challenge would get to come back to Crete for a week. With such a big prize at stake, you knew it was going to get competitive.

Angelea, who is going to school for broadcast journalism, asked to be taken to a ghetto, where she posed against graffiti. Allison and Laura, who was the last to leave the boutique, almost picked the same location, and Lisa really got into it on her photo shoot. Back at the house, the girls were typing furiously when Nigel showed up and time ran out. He'd review the blogs with Franca, and a winner would be announced the following night.

Meanwhile, the Tyra Mail suggested oddness approaching. It was something about wanting to be there, don't lie dahling, can you find your smize...it was all very confusing. That was fitting, because the photo shoot this week was the most confusing thing I've ever seen on Top Model, or in real life...

The girls would be shooting a motion editorial, shot by Tyra, based on Tyra's bestselling novel Modelland. Modelland is about a model school on top of a big hill that every model wants to get into, and there are villains and the entire place smells like blood oranges. Are you following me? Because I'm not sure that I am...doesn't this sound like Harry Potter in high heels?! I don't get it.

Anyway, the shooting would take place over two days, and part one of the finished product would be shown at this week's judging, and part two would be shown at next week's judging (OMG, NEXT WEEK IS THE FINALE!).

Day one of the shoot was absolutely ridiculous. The girls appeared in outfits designed by Michael Cinco, whom I'm convinced doesn't have a job outside of this show. They shot different chapters of the novel, and a lot of non-sensical garbage followed. It included Laura sifting through actual garbage, then shooting whipped cream into her mouth while wearing a wedding dress, all while trying not to appear sexy. Right, ‘cause whipped cream is never EVER sexy. Lisa got to run around, act crazy, and hold a baby doll while pretending to have substance - all things she's great at. Allison got to dress up like a hood version of Catwoman, eat blood oranges, look wide-eyed at the camera, and be generally weird. Perfect.

Angelea was given the difficult task of doing an emotional scene, and before it, she was crying to Tyra about how she doesn't know where she'd be if it wasn't there, and then pulled off a great performance.

Oh, did you want to know what the story's about? Too bad. I can't explain it, because I have no idea - and I also have no idea how this book became an alleged "NY Times Bestseller". I need to see some statistics on that. Is everyone at the NY Times high?

Anyway, that night, Nigel came to the house to announce the winner of the blog writing challenge, and surprisingly, it was Angelea, whose blog Franca thought was the most real and the most interesting to read. Lisa was pissed and said it came out of right field, and I have to agree.

Day two of the motion editorial featured Tyson Beckford, one of the most recognizably hot models that ever hotted up any runway. Did I mention hot? Because, hot. First he shot with Tyra, during which she sucked on his finger. Wouldn't you? Then the girls shot the opening scene of the whole movie, which was them trying to get up the hill to Modelland, followed by all the girls revealing their faces from masks (this scene would reveal the winner of the whole cycle at the finale).

Then it was time for panel, where part 1 of this monstrosity was shown to the world. The only way to really describe it was that it was an acid trippy MESS. Go YouTube it right now if you don't believe me. I guarantee you'll laugh your face off. For their part, the girls didn't do so badly. Angelea was very convincing, Laura engaged the camera too much (um, isn't that the point?), Allison was great according to Nigel, but Tyson didn't agree, and Lisa was the star of the day (is anybody surprised?).

During the deliberation, the judges couldn't make a decision, and an hour and a half into it, the producers were actually yelling at them to come to a close. But which girls were they confused about? Here's who made it on to the finale!

1. Lisa (no big surprise here - in my opinion, she's the one who deserves to win the whole thing)
2. Angelea (what?!?)

Laura and Allison were in the bottom two, and I didn't want either one of them to go home. Laura has the bubbliest personality and people want to be around her, but the judges weren't sure if she could do high fashion and persevere. Meanwhile, Allison is introverted and shy, but her quirkiness is a positive.

Ultimately, it was decided that the finalist in the competition would be Allison - and Laura was eliminated. Laura said that she wants to be respected as a good model. And Tyra said something got a little lost this time. Laura said that she doesn't have any regrets and she was the best her possible. There's no way she can ever be disappointed in her life, because at 22 people know who she is all around the world.

Next week is the finale - who's gonna win??!? Tell me in the comments!
