The Real World: San Diego

by Gina Scarpa

On last week's episode of The Real World: San Diego, Nate was feeling like he walked into a dream world as he attended a lesbian highlighter party to kick off Pride. All of the roomies went out to party and support Frank and Sam with the exception of Ashley and Zack, of course. They refuse to have anything to do with Pride unless they're forced to, which is exactly what happens to them courtesy of House of Blues. But more on that later...

Who knew that Nate had just a tragic backstory? He's lost five of his friends to suicide and now wants to do something to ensure other people don't have to go through the same pain he has. He's starting his own charity, The Living Memoir, where people can anonymously blog their feelings and find out that they're not alone. It's great idea with a lot of potential but he seems to be getting caught up in the wrong things. After a night of partying to celebrate his up and coming business, he passes out on the floor and nearly misses Pride altogether.

Meanwhile, Frank has caught the attention of a cutie named Michael and the two quickly hit it off. They spend the night together and attend the Pride parade together the next day. The pair, along with Sam, her fling for the weekend Brit, Priscilla, and Alexandra witness history as over 300 gay and active members of the military march for the first time at any Pride event.

Later, Zack, Ashley, and Nate roll up to the event and the non-couple look completely freaked out the entire time they're there. Pride is about being who you are, loving who you want, and being accepted for that so it makes absolutely no sense that two people who so vehemently disagree with homosexuality should be there. Still, Michael makes an attempt to talk to and get to know them as Frank hopes that they'll finally start to come around.

After just a few short days together, Frank is in love and tells Michael so. Dude, you gotta wait a little before you drop that on someone. Michael's response was simply, "I know you do" but this seems like more than just a quick, fun thing between them. It looks like there's real potential here... unless you watch the midseason trailer...

When Michael leaves to head back to LA, it seems that he's made some real progress with Zack and Ashley. In fact, the non-couple head out on a shopping trip with Frank to Hillcrest, a largely LGBT community. There, they laugh and joke, and Zack genuinely says that he's happy his roommate has found someone who makes him happy. Just when you thought he'd never come around, too!
