The Real World: San Diego

by Gina Scarpa

The first awkward moment of the new season of The Real World happens in the first five minutes, when I realize that the girl driving Priscilla to the new house is actually her mom. They have a cringeworthy conversation about where they've had sex in the house... and I'm ready to move on to the others!

The other roomies are: Ashley the model, Zach the freakishly tall jock, Nate the frat bot/nuclear engineer... yeah, you head me... Frank the outgoing, equal opportunity employer (aka bisexual), Alexandra the intelligent but shy singer, and Sam the take-me-or-leave-me lesbian.

I probably say this every season but this house is pretty ridiculous! The house is all windows, there is of course a hot tub, and even a beachy hangout area on the roof. The actual beach is literally in their backyard and you couldn't ask for a better view.

Of course, as soon as everyone meets each other, the guys are trying to figure out who they can hook up with. Alexandra has a boyfriend though, so she's off limits - for now. Frank doesn't like that she's taken because he's worried it will hold her back from going out and having fun. Or sleeping in his bed.

When the guys try to head out to the party, Sam crashes the dinner, and none of them seem too happy about it. Zach swears he has no intention of hooking up with any of the roomies but only time will tell.

Afterwards, everyone decides to spend their first night together quietly in the house instead of going ballistic at a bar or club somewhere. That has to be a Real World first. The next night is a different story as the roomies bail on Priscilla, the only person underage, to go out and party. Lucky for Priscilla that Nate stayed behind because the two end up hooking up and why shouldn't they? They've known each other for a day and a half.

Frank oversteps his boundaries a bit by pulling the phone away from Alexandra while talking to her boyfriend Byron to tell him how beautiful she is and how much he wishes she was single. Not cool. Later, Alexandra insists that he's her soulmate which doesn't sit well with Frank. He doesn't think it'll last. Well, he's the expert.

Priscilla tells Frank that Nate was super aggressive with her and she felt pressured to make out with him. I mean, she didn't look like she felt pressured when the footage aired. This prompts Frank to confront Nate, which ends up being a really uncomfortable conversation. Nate takes it well, but vents his frustrations in the diary room with Zach.

It's bad enough at the club when Alexandra tells Frank that she's not going to hook up with him (or anyone), but when a party crasher calls him a derogatory word, he flips out and storms out of the club.  In the car ride home, Sam tries to calm him down and makes a lot of sense when she says that he can't lose his cool every time someone calls him a name.  At the house, Alexandra tells Frank they're only going to be friends and he takes it pretty poorly.  I'd say punching a wall, stomping around, swearing and sulking, then passing out in front of her is not taking it well.  This guy seems like he's a WHOLLLLE lotta trouble...
