Survivor: South Pacific

by Gina Scarpa

I love people on Survivor who say things like "It's not over yet" when they're sitting at Redemption Island. It is over. Especially when you're the first one voted out from your tribe.

Anyway, Brandon realized what an idiot he was for announcing to his Upolu tribe at tribal council that he wanted Mikayla gone... because Mikayla isn't gone. She's very much still in the tribe. Now, he feels terrible. Is anyone getting the feeling that every time we see Brandon, he's acting completely different than the last time we saw Brandon? Slightly unnerving.

Attending the first duel of the season is Coach and Stacey for Upolu and Ozzy and Elyse for Savaii. The challenge for Semhar and Christine is to balance a totem on a pole that keeps getting higher as time goes on. Before we get started though, Semhar recites some spoke word to herself about being naked and having babies. She says it calms her. What it doesn't do is make her a good competitor because she drops her pole first and Christine lives on...

Afterwards, at Upolu, Brandon reveals to everyone that he's Russell's nephew and thus, the target on his back grows. Mikayla confronts Brandon to find out what his problem is and I'm not sure she gets any answers because one minute, he says he's trying to apologize to her and the next, he's calling her out in front of anyone and saying she doesn't have an alliance to protect her. Two minutes later, he's crying on the beach because he raised his voice and Coach is concerned. Uh yeah. As he should be.

Over at Savaii, Papa Bear realizes that he and Cochran are at the bottom of the peckin order while Ozzy confides to Keith that he has the idol. Well that was a mistake because he went running right to Whitney with that information.

At the immunity challenge, players have to run across a bridge over troubled water and retrieve bags of flag banners. The catch is that the person running is tethered to a rope that their tribemates must crank out to them to give them enough slack to continue, then reel them back in. It started out close but ended up not even a contest - Upolu stomped Savaii, untying and unraveling all of their banners before they even had one.

Of course, it comes down to Papa Bear and Cochran to be voted out because this early in the game, you have to look at keeping your tribe strong.  Papa Bear's tactic to stay in the game is to (not totally convincingly) pretend like he has the idol.  At tribal, Cochran tries to defend himself and say that he's not a physical liability while Papa Bear calls out "the five" for alienating him, Dawn, and Cochran.  Jim acts like there's no such thing as "the five" but come on, buddy.  Who are you kidding?

When the votes are read, Savaii decides that it's time for Papa Bear to pay a little visit to Redemption Island.  Can't say I'm happy about it...
