Top Chef: Just Desserts Season 2

by Michael Lamp

Famed pastry chef Pichet Ong is with Gail in the Top Chef kitchen. He talks about a lack of clever candy bars in the market, which leads us to this week's Quickfire Challenge: the chefs must each create an original candy bar.

Pichet's least favorites are Matthew, who ran out of time, and Katzie who's dessert he calls a ‘mess on a stick.' Needless to say, Katzie strongly disagrees.

Sally and Rebecca were the favorites. He loved Sally's use of forbidden rice and Rebecca opting for panna cotta. Sally claims the victory.

For the Elmination Challenge, the cheftestants are split into teams of three. The chefs will create summer treats for a crowd of waterpark enthusiasts.

The team of Megan, Katzie and Rebecca is called to Judges' Table first. After some brief suspense, Gail reveals that these three ladies are the top group this week. Their mix of a ‘treat on a stick,' an ice cream sandwich and a shaker float checkd on all the boxes the c.

Katzie is named the individual winner, redeeming herself after the messy stick business of the Quickfire. The judges then call for the other two teams.

Johnnie questions the effort behind Sally's smoothie, The judges thought Carlos' popsicle was overly sugary. Amanda's take on funnel cake was cold. difficult to manage and rather un-funnel-y. Gail wants to know why she got a cold funnel cake, and Amanda is sort of looking left and right, clearly hoping her teammates will jump in an help her. They don't.

On the other losing team, Chris' drink was anything but refreshing - Johnny calls it sticky. Orlando stands by his deconstructed root beer float, but Gail is quick to remind him that there was nothing ‘floaty' about his dish. Matthew's sautéed strawberries were delicious, but the judges don't see the fit at a waterpark on such a hot day.

Gail declares Sally, Matthew and Chris as safe. Interesting move to not declare an entire team safe. That's saucy stuff, Gail Simmons.

Amanda is eliminated. She's disappointed but self aware of the mistakes she made. After a few sniffles and a wipe of the eye, this episode is a wrap.
